If you’re the kind of person who won’t leave the house without a sports watch, it may soon be time to get rid of it. Inventors have unveiled (发布) a new digital running shirt, which has all the features of an electronic tracking device and more.

The “D-Shirt” is made from a special fabric (织物) woven with sensors (传感器), which record your heart rate, GPS location, route, speed and altitude.

The garment, which is lightweight and washable, sends the information to an app on your smartphone via Bluetooth. The phone can store and analyze data from the fabric, showing the person’s route, time, speed, heart rate and number of calories burned. It can also help indicate when the runner is pushing themselves too hard and risking heart attack.

“We believe that our connected lives in the future should not be more complicated. They should be easier. So we are developing technology which does not require people to change their habits,” said Stanislas Vandier, deputy chief executive. “You never leave home without a shirt. So we are simply turning a T-shirt into a D-Shirt. In the future, the same principle can be applied to all sorts of garments.”

Transmissions between the T-shirt and the phone can only be made when the wearer is within 10 meters of the phone, so if it is left at home the data will arrive when the runner returns. If the runner or their personal trainer takes the phone with them, it means they can monitor the run in real time.

Developers are now working on heat, respiration (呼吸) and perspiration (排汗) sensors, so this shirt can be particularly helpful for people in extreme conditions, such as athletes, first responders, and soldiers. It is hoped that in the future, other factors such as blood oxygen and blood glucose levels can also be monitored using the fabric.

1. Which of the following is a feature of the “D-Shirt”?

A. It is more accurate than a sports watch.

B. It can store and analyze the runner’s data.

C. It can design routes and speed limits for the runner.

D. It can help the runner know when they’d better slow down.

2. The underlined word “garments” in Paragraph 4 probably means ______.

A. materials B. clothes

C. extreme conditions D. electronic devices

3. According to Stanislas Vandier, the idea behind the “D-Shirt” is to ______.

A. use same principles for different products

B. make life simpler through technology

C. help people get rid of unhealthy habits

D. develop affordable modern gadgets for ordinary people

4. We can infer from the last paragraph that the next generation “D-Shirt” would probably ______.

A. keep you connected with the Internet wherever you go

B. drive sports records beyond people’s imagination

C. read and adjust people’s blood levels

D. provide data for more health factors

All children, especially teenagers, need parents – not friends, not school administrators and not policemen. Friends, administrators and policemen are important parts of an adolescent’s life. But more than anything else, they need parents – the only people who love them enough to laugh with them, weep over them and never leave them.

Parents aren’t perfect, either. But as long as you stick with the two basics for successful parenting – always communicating with a higher power and keeping your sense of humor – you won’t go far wrong.

Let’s say that your 14-year-old son has tried to go out without you noticing again, or your 16-year-old daughter has told you she’s going to drive her friends to Las Vegas. Take time before shouting at your teen to consider what you want to accomplish. Pray and avoid grinding (咬牙) your teeth together – it’ll just make them hurt and won’t do anything to solve your problem.

One summer, I discovered that my 14- and 16-year-old sons had plotted to meet a couple of girls in a quiet place, much to the distress of the girls’ mothers.

One of the mothers called me and voiced her worries about what was going on. I’d been uneasy ever since my sons had left a couple of hours earlier but I didn’t have anything specific to base that uneasiness on. However, when the mom and I compared notes, everything clicked into place. Our husbands thought we were “worrying too much” but the two of us took a drive to where my boys were “camping” and found them getting very cozy.

My two sons had only recently begun going out without telling me and tried to argue that “nothing happened”. But their pleas fell on deaf ears; they were not allowed to have social lives for two months. In addition, my older son also had to work for the Park Service as volunteer labor to clean up the camp grounds.

The more creative the punishment, the more likely it is to be remembered as a consequence of the behavior. I should add that today my older boy is a successful engineer, married and the father of six children.

5. When the author found that her sons had left home a couple of hours earlier, she ______.

A. asked her husband to find out what they were up to

B. began to worry that something bad might happen

C. called the mom of one of their classmates to figure it out

D. believed her sons could definitely take care of themselves

6. Which of the following words best describe successful parenting according to the article?

A. Guiding and inventive. B. Encouraging and humorous.

C. Sensitive and demanding. D. Tough and stubborn.

7. We can infer from the article that the author ______.

A. had a low opinion of her husband

B. often got incredibly angry at her sons’ bad behavior and gave them lectures

C. believed that parents should never punish their children physically

D. took pride in her parenting methods

8. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. What should we do if our children sneak out?

B. Be a parent, not a friend, to your teenager.

C. Today’s children need creative punishments.

D. Perfect parents don’t exist in this world.

Textbooks 101: Why, When, How, Where and What to Buy

By StudentAwards

1. To Buy or Not To Buy?

Q. Is having absolutely no textbooks a good idea for university? I’m asking because I don’t wanna waste money on textbooks, and during high school I never really opened my textbook once and still did OK. (posted by: Xiaohaha)

A. It depends on the professor and the course. It also depends on the university. Some courses you really don’t need the textbook, as the assignments and exams are based on the material taught in class, with the text only supplementing (补充) the lectures. Other courses, you definitely need the textbook in order to do assignments, readings, etc. Some professors will examine you on material in the textbook, even if they don’t cover that material in class.

Some courses also have “course packs”, which are materials that the professor puts together and sells in the bookstore. These are generally necessary to buy, as they contain material that the professor considers important. (posted by: CatRunner)

Q. How do you actually find out whether you need [textbooks]? I doubt many professors would tell you the books aren’t necessary, and is finding senior students who have taken the same courses that easy? (posted by: Zion)

A. You go to a few classes and see how the professor structures the course. For example, most professors will assign homework out of the textbook, but only a few will post the questions online so that you can get by without a textbook. Stuff like that will help you decide. (posted by: ktel)

I’ve had plenty of professors tell us that the texts were recommended only. They said they weren’t necessary unless we wanted to gain a deeper understanding of the materials, we were lacking in a specific area, or we had done poorly in one of the pre-requisite (作为前提的) courses. (posted by: CatRunner)

Facebook is a good place to start networking with senior students and finding out if textbooks are necessary. Also, by university you should get a sense of what your learning style is. Some people can get away with not reading textbooks at all and still do extremely well, so they don’t really need to buy them. Of course, that depends a lot on your area of study, but it is doable. (posted by: Spengler)
