“Have you ever told your story before?”

“No.”

“ 1 ?”

“No one ever asked.”

Dave Isay wanted to change that. In 2003, he set up a recording booth in Grand Central Station and 2 the StoryCorps Project. Isay had learned, through his work as a documentary radio producer, that a microphone makes people ask questions of others that they 3 wouldn’t ask. Isay reflects in his book Ties That Bind: Stories of Love and Gratitude from the First Ten Years of StoryCorps: “We can 4 the most meaningful poetry in the words and stories of the ordinary people around us, 5 we just have the courage to ask meaningful questions and the patience to 6 closely to the answers.”

Asking meaningful questions requires 7 because asking is such a countercultural (反传统的) activity in our culture of telling, observes Edgar Schein in his recent book, Humble Inquiry: The Gentle Art of Asking Instead of Telling.

Our problem-solving culture 8 people who know things and tell others what they know. In this culture, having to ask is regarded as a(n) 9 of weakness or ignorance. Asking briefly gives the other person 10 in the conversation and makes you seem 11 .

Those with the most 12 tend to tell more often than ask, and those who ask are 13 viewed as naive (无知的) or annoying or both. Case in point: Just last week, someone said her boss told her not to 14 so many questions during meetings. He insisted, “It makes it seem as if you don’t 15 what you’re doing.” Yet the primary 16 of asking, according to Schein, are that we generate better ideas and make fewer 17 in judgment.

Asking good questions 18 courage, patience, and, as Edgar Schein says, skill and art. He says a question 19 have “the skill and the art of drawing someone out, of asking questions to which you do not already know the answer, of building a relationship 20 curiosity and interest in the other person.”

People presume that my disability has to do with being an amputee (被截肢者), but that’s not the case; our insecurities are our disabilities, and I struggle with those, as does everyone.

– Aimee Mullins (1976 - , American athlete, actress, and fashion model who was born with a medical condition that resulted in the amputation (截肢) of both of her lower legs)

人们以为我的限制和截肢有关,但事实并非如此。我们的限制源自于不安全感,而我和每个人一样需要与它抗衡。

One day, when Mr Black was giving a lesson, he found that a student was not listening to him. Instead, he was writing a letter.

“Who are you writing to, my boy?” he asked kindly.

“To nobody,” the student said, covering the paper with his hands.

“To nobody? I don’t believe it.”

“Oh, oh, to myself,” the student answered nervously.

“What does your letter say then?”

“Sorry, sir, how should I know? I haven’t received it yet.”
