Science fiction crime (犯罪) movie Ghost in the Shell (《攻壳机动队》) will be released on April 7 on the Chinese mainland. Starring US actress Scarlett Johansson, the movie is based on the Japanese manga of the same name. But upon the announcement that Johansson was to play the lead in it, fans criticized the casting (角色分配) choice. Some accused (谴责) it of being another example of Hollywood “whitewashing”, which is when white actors are chosen to play non-white characters. In an interview with Marie Claire magazine, Johansson disagreed, saying: “I certainly would never presume (擅自) to play another race of a person. Diversity is important in Hollywood, and I would never want to feel like I was playing a character that was offensive (冒犯的) .”
