JUST ASK | 成长不烦恼

本文作者: Daniel Daugherty
Q

Dear Daniel,

I am used to having a lot of friends in junior high school. Now I feel very lonely because my old friends each have their own best friend, but I don’t have one. I am afraid I will lose all of them one day and I’m afraid to be alone. Could you tell me how to deal with this?

Turtledove

A

Dear Turtledove,

I know your pain. I had a lot of friends in South Korea – some very close – but I moved away for work. Now I’m in Beijing and I usually eat dinner by myself.

If you go to college and move away for work, you will meet many people. You will make more friends than you can even imagine. You will also say goodbye to most of them.

How to deal with loneliness? Look to the caterpillar (毛毛虫). It endures (忍耐) being by itself for a while, but when it emerges (摆脱) from its cocoon (茧), it’s a beautiful butterfly.

How can you become a butterfly? Be patient, and don’t fear loneliness. Instead, work on yourself. Make yourself into a butterfly. Learn a skill, practice your hobby and do whatever you are passionate (热爱的) about. Right now, I’m learning to play the violin and growing chili peppers.

Become the one you want to be, and then fly out into the world like a butterfly. That’s the important part. Show people how awesome you can be.

People will come after you. After all, everyone wants to catch a butterfly friend.Daniel
