New vocabulary on the menu

  印度英语词汇进入标准英语行列


  SOME brand new words are making their way into the Oxford Dictionary. The word "Hinglish (Hindi plus English) is now officially an English word, meriting a place in the new Indian edition of the Concise Oxford English Dictionary. The other new entrants include "Bikram Yoga" and other yoga-related terms. Many more food-related words such as masala and makhani have also made it into the elite dictionary.

  
Debate over early English lessons

  日本调查显示四成人反对小学开设英语必修课


  OPINIONS are divided over whether English language lessons should be mandatory at elementary schools, Japan's education ministry said recently. Among people who expressed opinions on the matter, 55 per cent are in favour of the proposal and 40 per cent are against, Japan's Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Ministry said. In an opinion poll released by the ministry in 2005, 71 per cent of guardians surveyed favoured making English compulsory in primary schools, while 54 per cent of teachers were against it.
