Sisters of Kang Tongbi, it's time to unite!
WHAT kind of character does a modern female university student need? Hard to say? Not for some successful females who spoke at a discussion hosted by Barnard College, an elite private women's school in the US, last week in Beijing. One of them, Yang Lan, a famous television anchor, said that female students should establish themselves and be confident, just as she was in college. Yang's teacher, Wu Qing, a professor of English at Beijing Foreign Studies University, agreed, and said that three things are important for females: courage, passion and confidence. Debora Spar, the president of Barnard, said that with women playing a more significant role in society, it is necessary to get younger ones to think expansively and courageously about the impact they can have on the world. The discussion was held in honor of Kang Tongbi, the daughter of political reformer Kang Youwei and one of China's prominent feminists, who was Barnard's first Asian student a century ago.
