完形填空实战演练(三)

While looking through my photographs the other day, I came across one of a basket weaver (编织者) from Ssesse Island, Uganda. Then all the 1 came back to me.

Weaving basket designs is a complex craft (手艺) that takes much skill and cleverness. To see an expert 2 is so fascinating that I watched this particular lady for hours. What was interesting, 3 , was that a young African man had also become 4 as the basket weaver performed her craft.

5 whether the young man was more interested in the basket weaving or in the weaver, I 6 the unexpected couple. On being asked about his 7 in weaving, the young man looked at me puzzled and 8 that he didn’t know how to weave and that he thought we can always learn something from 9 .

Of all the lessons I’ve learned during my travels, one of the finest is that 10 has nothing to do with wealth and little to do with 11 education! Wisdom can be 12 in every village, every town, every city, country, and continent in every 13 of the earth. Often the wisest are not those who are the most heard but, 14 , those who are quiet and modest.

The young man on Ssesse Island is a perfect 15 . His position in the village was such that he was not 16 to study the lowly task of basket weaving; yet, there he was. 17 , this modest young man spoke with such natural wisdom.

Much time has passed since I met the young man but I have 18 his memories and wisdom in my heart 19 since. And I believe whole-heartedly that it doesn’t 20 who we are, we can always learn something from one another. Just a thought.

There was a man who played the piano in a small bar. There were not too many 1 , but because he was a good piano player, some people 2 came in every night just to hear him play. But one night, a patron (老主顾) told him he didn’t want to hear him play but to sing a song.

The man said, “I have never 3 that before in public. I think I’m 4 at playing the piano.”

But the customer 5 . He told the waiter, “I’m 6 listening to the piano day after day. I want to hear something new and I want that guy to sing.”

He had talent he was 13 on! He may have lived the rest of his life as a no-name piano player in a no-name bar, but because he had to sing, he 14 to become one of the best-known entertainers in America.

You, too, have skills and 15 . You may not feel as if your “talent” is particularly 16 , but it may be better than you think! And with persistence (坚持), most skills can be 17 . Besides, you may as well have no ability at all if you sit on whatever talent you 18 ! The 19 is not “What ability do I have that is useful?” It is 20 “How will I use whatever ability I have?”.
