PERIL has been a defining trait of the last decade. Check out the top stories of the last 10 years:
1. 2001: On September 11, terrorists hijacked four airplanes and flew two of them into the World Trade Center towers in New York, destroying both buildings and killing thousands of people. The US invaded Afghanistan in October in a hunt for Osama bin Laden, head of Al-Qaida which, according to the US, was behind the attacks. On December 1, 2009, the US announced that it would send an additional 30,000 soldiers to Afghanistan.
2. 2002: The euro was made the official currency of 12 European Union states. Today, 16 EU nations use it. Ten countries joined EU in 2004 and another two in 2007, bringing the total to 27. The Treaty of Lisbon (the “EU Constitution”), took effect on December 1, 2009. After that, the EU elected its first full-time president and foreign policy chief.
