Speedy development propels China into the global arena

CHINA has gone through many challenges in the past decade, but managed to develop steadily at a high speed. Check out the country's top 10 events:
1. 2001: After 15 years of tough negotiations, China joined the World Trade Organization. But membership in the world trade body didn't solve all of its trade problems, though it did open doors that were closed to it in the past. It also helped China become one of the world's biggest exporters.
2. 2002: China ushered in a new generation of leadership, led by President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao. The leaders introduced the notion of “a harmonious society” where everyone joins in developing the economy, politics, culture and society. The leaders also introduced the “Scientific Outlook on Development”, a philosophy to help China weather the global economic crisis and political risks to become the world's third largest economy.
