Augusta State University (ASU) and Augusta-Richmond County are proud to be hosting the 2009 Science Olympiad National Tournament. Some of the listed hotels are holding a block of rooms; others simply have a guaranteed rate. When contacting the hotel/motel, mention the National Science Olympiad or NSO. The prices listed do not include 13% sales and entertainment tax.

Most of the rooms being held contain two queen beds, but some of the rooms are suites (套间) or rooms with king beds. Different hotels/motels have different numbers of units.

Most hotels/motels are located near Washington Road, I-20, or River Watch Parkway, and are about 3-4 miles from campus.

The indicated price includes complimentary continental breakfast (免费欧式早餐) or deluxe (豪华的) continental breakfast unless otherwise noted. All hotels/motels have agreed to begin serving breakfast at 5:45 am on Saturday, 16 May, 2009, unless noted.

Summer vacation is coming up so this is the perfect time to discuss some great English language literature to take on a long train journey or while you’re hanging out with the family.

Before getting into the recommendations, we need to determine your English reading comprehension level so you don’t pick a book that’s so challenging that it’s stressful or so simple that it’s boring.

If you’re a beginner, you can read a children’s book or a book that you’ve read in Chinese translation. This will help you get over any unfamiliar words or phrases, since you’re already familiar with the story. If you’re at the intermediate (中级的) level, popular books like mysteries and thrillers are good options, as they’ll be guaranteed page turners and that will increase the likelihood of your getting all the way through the book. For advanced readers, science fiction, classic works of literature or contemporary prize winners (Booker, Nobel, Pulitzer) are good bets.

The most important thing is to pick a book that you’re really interested in. When you pick up a new book in English, the first few chapters may be really hard to get through, as you have to get used to the way the author uses the language. But after the first few chapters, things get a lot easier, especially if you get involved in the story.

Another great way to keep yourself interested over the holiday is to find a friend who’s interested in reading the same book. You can make goals that you both want to achieve and discuss plot lines or vocabulary issues with each other by SMS or e-mail.

Some quick recommendations: Harry Potter, start with the first book and go on from there; the Narnia series; anything by US writer Michael Crichton or British writer Agatha Christie; and if you like horror (恐怖小说), US writer Stephen King is always fun. But really you should just find a topic or author that you’re interested in, and the rest will go from there. Happy reading!

13. The third paragraph tells us that ______.

A. a beginner ought to read English books with Chinese notes

B. books of different levels of difficulty can determine readers’ comprehension level

C. readers of different levels should choose the reading materials best suited to them

D. prize winners’ works are good options for intermediate level readers

14. Readers are recommended to find a friend to ______.

A. get together to read the same book B. help speed up the reading pace

C. assess each other’s reading levels D. share ideas with each other

15. What does the text try to convey?

A. Interest is the best teacher. B. Practice makes perfect.

C. Reading makes a full personality. D. Well begun is half done.

16. If you are at the intermediate level, you are advised to read ______.

a. Harry Potter b. the Narnia series

c. Stories by Stephen King d. classic works of literature

e. science fiction novels

A. abcd B. abcde C. abc D. abe

People are always saying that you should make friends with native speakers to practice the language. Now in the Internet age, that’s much easier.

The best way to strike up a friendship with English speakers online is to find those you share a common interest with. If you’re able to discuss a hobby like movies or basketball together it will be much easier to start those friendships.

Get personal

Getting involved in a forum based on your interests is also a great way to learn words that you might never have met in class.

Describe your personal interests

So, where do you go to find English speakers with like-minded interests? The most obvious places to look are Google and Yahoo. These popular Internet sites are bursting with groups and forums.

Once you’ve found a group that suits you, spend some time thinking about what you want to say in your first post. It’s a good idea to introduce yourself, give your nickname and age, say where you’re from, and tell what your interests are.

Ask a question

This is generally the fastest way to get involved in a forum and to introduce yourself to others. On a movie forum you could ask something like, “I’ve just seen the movie Revolutionary Road. I thought it was brilliant. Has anyone read the book?”

Then after you’ve met and bonded with an English speaker in a forum or group, try suggesting a time when you could chat using Skype. This free software allows you to make a telephone call over the Internet.

Websites to check out

* www.englishforums.com: To find someone to talk to using Skype, check out this site. Simply put Skype in the search engine and that will bring up the many people who have posted a desire to practice their English using Skype. Its chatrooms are also good places to find English speakers.

* mylanguagexchange.com: The website is an online language exchange community. There are even lessons plans to help structure the conversation.

* www.englishonline.org.cn/en: The British Council’s English online website is another place with lively forums worth checking out. Or you could join a Facebook group. There are thousands on the website.

Online dos and dont’s

One common mistake people make when they approach English speakers online is to begin by saying that they want to be friends to improve their English.

While this may be the truth, don’t say it. It suggests you have little interest in a real friendship.

Be imaginative in approaching people. Perhaps you see that someone is from a certain country that you would like to visit. Tell them so, and then ask if they can tell you a bit about it. Then tell them about yours.

A. advise readers to hide their real purposes

B. suggest suitable ways of starting a dialogue

C. instruct readers on how to learn English

D. inform readers of specific web surfing rules

19. Where could you go if you wanted to learn how to start a conversation in English in a systematic way?

A. Google or Yahoo B. mylanguagexchange.com

C. www.englishforums.com D. www.englishonline.org.cn/en

20. According to the text, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. Asking questions is the only way to get involved in a forum or a group.

Whether you are looking for a classy hotel or a night under the stars, we can guide you through your different options.

Bed and Breakfast

Bed and breakfasts offer exactly what they suggest, a bed for the night and breakfast in the morning. People who hate the coldness of hotels

but want more comfort than a hostel often choose to stay at bed and breakfasts. “B&B’s” are often found in the countryside.

Hostels

Hostels are the best accommodation option for travelers on a budget. Informal places usually with a friendly youthful atmosphere, they offer dormitory beds for rent. Bathrooms are usually down the hall.

A lot of hostels put males and females in separate dormitories but many don’t. If the idea of a mixed dorm worries you, check the accommodation provided by the hostel on its website.

Remember to check reviews by previous guests online before you book your hostel.

Couch Surfing

Couch surfing is a growing trend among young internationals. The idea is that you become a member of the online couch-surfing community (www.couchsurfing.com) and then when you travel, look up other members in that country and ask to stay on their couch. Most hosts will suggest sightseeing trips and take you out in the evening, making it a great way to see things that aren’t in your guidebook. And remember, it may be free but don’t forget to offer to buy your host a drink or dinner.

Hotels

These tend to be more expensive than other types of accommodation. Though it is possible to find inexpensive hotels, note that there is a big difference between hotel star rankings. Three stars, for instance, usually means that a hotel’s rooms have connected bathrooms, a telephone, TV and a lift. A one-star hotel might offer a small room with a bed and an en-suite bathroom with only a shower.

Few budget travelers choose to stay in hotels because they lack the friendly atmosphere you find in most hostels.

Camping

Sleeping under the stars! For budget travelers staying at camping grounds is the cheapest way to travel. The drawback is having to carry a tent with you. Camping grounds can be found across Europe, America and Australia. However, if you intend on camping in busy cities check first where the nearest campsite is. More often than not, they are in the suburbs, which can mean lengthy bus rides into town when you want to see the sights.

21. The article could be most likely be found in ______.

A. a fashion magazine B. a business newspaper

C. an advertisement D. a travel website

22. The underlined phrase “on a budget” probably refers to “______”.

A. wanting to avoid unnecessary expenses

B. preferring to pay by credit card

C. preferring simple accommodation

D. wanting to experience a friendly youthful atmosphere

23. You can “couch surf” after you ______.

A. become a member of the online couch-surfing community

B. receive an invitation from a friend or relative in another country

C. buy your host a drink or dinner to cover the expenses

D. agree to go on sightseeing trips to places that aren’t in the travel guidebook

24. According to the text, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. B&B’s are the best option for budget travelers.

B. Hostels all provide both separate and mixed rooms

C. Budget travelers tend to avoid hotels for their unfriendliness and high prices.

D. The only drawback of camping is having to carry a tent.

Energy used in the home creates 25% of Britain’s CO2 emissions. Around 75% of this is used for heating, and the rest is for electrical appliances.

Nine steps to save CO2 and money.

1. Low Carbon Lifestyles should be fun, so use the TV, computer, hi-fi and radio as much as you like, as they use little power.

2. If you bath every day, consider bathing once a week and showering on other days. The CO2 saving for one person reducing their number of baths from seven times a week to once a week would be around 470kg CO2 and £130 a year.

3. If four people in the house shower four times a week instead three people showering seven times a week, there would still be a saving of around 78kg CO2 and £22 a year.

4. Improve house insulation (保温) so that you don’t need to use the bar fire. Save around 313kg CO2 and £87 per year.

5. Only wash clothes when dirty. For example underwear after a day, over- garments less often. (Washing wears clothes out faster than wearing.) Washing can often be reduced by half, saving around 134kg CO2 and £37 a year.

6. Turn off all appliances at the plug. Save around 188kg CO2 and £52 a year.

7. Only fill the kettle (壶) with the amount of water you need. Save around 91kg CO2 and £25 a year.

8. Fit low-energy bulbs, and turn off lights when not in the room. Save around 325kg CO2 and £91 a year.

9. You have saved around 1,600kg CO2 and £455 a year. You deserve (值得拥有) a treat. A really nice massage (按摩)? (Human powered activities create negligible CO2.)

Here is a table of electricity use in a typical house with 2 adults and 2 children.

25. The author suggests all the following ways to cut CO2 emissions and save money EXCEPT ______.

A. bathing less often

B. changing to energy-efficient appliances

C. washing outer wear less often D. stopping listening to the radio

26. The author suggests cutting energy use by ______.

A. watching no television B. cutting computer use

C. improving house insulation D. putting standby appliances into use

27. The figure in the blank in Table 2 should be ______.

A. £60 B. £98 C. £87 D. £103
