There’s an old saying: “A coward (懦夫) dies many times; a hero dies but once.”

So it is with newspapers – their death has been predicted many times, but they are still with us. But will they be with us forever?

Newspapers have survived as long as they have because they can bring an in-depth coverage of issues that require time and consideration. Readers go to newspapers to learn about complex issues. Reputable newspapers become opinion leaders in their editorial and commentary columns, quite apart from their ability to investigate issues and become breakers of important news.

However, the threat of the Internet is likely to prove profound. Many young people now turn to the Web for news. However much radio and television led the attack on the newspaper as a news source, one of its main sources of income – advertising remained intact (未受影响的). Not only does the Web take readers, it also takes advertising. Many newspapermen see the threat of the Web as being of a new kind. Some publications will go under, but those which serve specialized markets and which are commercially solid will survive.

The death of the newspaper has been predicted many times, but the newspaper is still with us – and is likely to remain so.

When Kentucky Fried Chicken announced several weeks ago that it would be introducing grilled chicken (烤鸡), I’m embarrassed to admit how excited I felt.

I became a Kentucky Fried fan back in the 1980s when I was a teen. But over the next two decades I cut back for health reasons. Why, then, did I want the Colonel’s new, healthier product so badly?

For one thing, I wasn’t alone in my interest in the chicken. Thanks to Internet coupons for free meals, crowds went running to restaurants across the country. After accepting more than 10 million coupons, the chain had to stop the free food give-away.

CEO Roger Eaton later apologized. But his “apology” was more a sign of celebration than regret. “Not in our wildest imagination could we believe the response we’ve gotten,” Eaton said.

After all, the whole point of the coupon was to draw attention to the new product.

But Eaton’s real aim, I suspect, was far more dangerous. Like every other fast food CEO, he faces a serious challenge in this age of nutritional awareness: How to get folks to eat food that is bad for them.

Companies have found ways to make money from consumer concerns over nutrition by introducing “healthy” menu options.

A recent study of fast food eating habits showed that people who even consider a healthy item feel they have a right to the high-fat option.

This may be news to academics, but I think the fast food bosses have known about it for years. They understand how their customers think.

I tried KFC grilled chicken a few days ago. It is much healthier than the chain’s Original Recipe. The problem is that when it came time to order my food, I felt I could go ahead and order some unhealthy food too.

I gave myself permission to order two sides, and in the end, my meal was more than 800 calories. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers 2,000 calories to be a normal daily amount.

KFC’s grilled chicken may go on to be a great success. But like every “healthy” option offered by fast food chains, it’s a trick. The Colonel couldn’t care less whether you lose weight, as long as you keep making him money.

4. What’s the writer’s attitude towards Kentucky Fried Chicken’s new product, grilled chicken?

A. Embarrassed. B. Hateful.

C. Excited. D. Indifferent.

A. the writer enjoyed grilled chicken a lot more than fried chicken

B. you should always say no to high-fat food

C. the writer felt like he had the right to buy high fat food along with a healthier option

D. you need to watch out for the calories you eat at each meal

7. We can learn from the article that fast food chains offered “healthy” menu options to ______.

A. help customers lose weight

B. get customers to feel good about them

C. follow official regulations

D. earn more money

If you feel at present that you don’t have enough friends in your life, one reason may be that you have let yourself become too busy to make time for the relationships you already have. Starting and keeping friendship requires effort and commitment.

Many of us let our lives become so busy with work and other commitments that we don’t get around to scheduling time for pleasure and renewal (叙旧) with the friends, relatives and acquaintances we already have.

Making the effort to call your friends more regularly and to accept more of the invitations you receive from others can improve your social life in a hurry!

Are there any people you could call right now and be assured of a pleasant welcome? Are there people that you could count on to help you in time of difficulty? Can you have close talks with them? Do you have fun when you are together? Are you happy to have them in your life?

If you haven’t seen much of them lately, is it because you have become too busy? Have you grown apart? Was there an argument?

If the main reason you haven’t been getting together with the people you already know is because you have gotten too busy, take a good look at how you spend your time. Compare it with your real values and priorities (优先考虑的事) in life. Is your busy lifestyle really bringing you the quality of life that you want?

If you have become too busy for friends, why has this happened? Are you seeking material toys in your life at the expense of relationships with other human beings? Have you allowed your time to be over-committed because you never say ‘‘No” to anyone? Do you insist on doing things yourself that could be delegated to others? If so, why? Do you believe that everything depends on you?

Examine whether the way you are now spending your time accurately reflects your deepest values and priorities. Make sure that you schedule adequate time for the things that are truly most important to you.

If you really want to keep friends in your life, make a space in your schedule, and a space in your heart for them.

8. In this passage the author mainly discusses ________.

A. how to balance friendship and work

B. how to spend our spare time

C. whether we should keep friendship

10. What does the underlined word “delegated” probably mean?

A. appointed B. replaced

A. you spend too much time seeking material toys in your life

A dog might be man’s best friend but my dogs are more like my kids! I think everyone should experience the unconditional love of a dog but owning one is not for the nervous. It’s work – especially when it comes to the job of cleaning up their waste. When you clean up after your dogs your neighbors will love you for keeping those smelly land mines (地雷) out of their yards. But there are even bigger benefits. You’ll not only be doing your part to keep bacteria out of your yard and neighborhood, you’re also keeping harmful microorganisms (微生物) away from our drinking water supply.

There are more than 77 million pet dogs in the United States and their waste is found in backyards, neighborhood parks, and the green areas that frequently line small waterways. When you don’t clean up after your dog, heavy rain can carry bacteria from the waste into drains (下水道). Dog waste left in parks and other such places can be swept directly into nearby streams. This affects the quality of the water in our creeks (小溪) and streams but that’s not all. These small channels often empty directly into our local drinking water supply or the water where we boat or fish.

Dog waste contains harmful microorganisms like roundworms and e. Coli that can be passed onto humans. This is why dog waste should not be used as fertilizer (肥料) around your home. And it won’t fertilize the yard if you leave it behind either like other types of manure (肥料). Dogs don’t eat the same kinds of natural material that cattle, horses or even elephants eat. The waste from those animals is actually beneficial for your yard and garden.

You should always pick up after your dog and throw the waste in the trash can. Some smaller cities might prefer the waste to be washed down the toilet, but in cities where there are many dogs, it's best to send the waste to the landfill (垃圾填埋场).

When you properly dispose of your dog’s waste you’ll be doing your part to keep harmful bacteria out of our yards, our neighborhoods, and our drinking water. Not to mention off the bottom of our shoes.

13. The main purpose of the article is to ______.

15. Which of the following shows the organization of the article?

A few years ago I was on a bicycle trip when I got off my bike for a rest. I sat down on the grass. A few seconds later, I was covered in ants. They were swarming all over me so I got up and brushed them off. It was a strange experience but I soon forgot about it.

A couple of years later, I was living in Jordan. I had just moved into a modern flat and was unpacking plates when I saw something move out of the corner of my eye. I looked over at the kitchen drawer and there was a cockroach (蟑螂) crawling (爬) out of it. I screamed. Then I grabbed a can of insecticide and sprayed (喷) it on the cockroach. He ran under the nearby bathroom door. It took me three days before I found the courage to open the bathroom door to see if he was still alive. He wasn’t.

Why did I react so violently to one lone insect when a closer encounter with hundreds of ants hardly affected me? The answer is easy: because cockroaches are creepy (令人毛骨悚然的) crawlies and ants aren’t. Creepy crawlies are those little bugs (虫子) which cause feelings such as anxiety – they make your skin crawl.

Did you know that some people feel such a fear of bugs that it becomes a phobia (恐惧症)? Psychologists have offered many explanations. Some say we associate them with dirt and disease. Or that these are life forms that are so alien to us, that we find them disgusting for their dissimilarity.

Insects, however, don’t follow our rules – they just do what they want and invade our space. Unfortunately, although insects and bugs have been a successful animal species up to now, many of them, like many other species nowadays, are under threat of dying out. Entomologists (昆虫学家) warn that this could upset entire ecosystems and lead to all kinds of disastrous consequences.

So my advice to you is: the next time you feel the urge to stamp on, splatter or spray a creepy crawly, give a thought to the planet and stop.

17. Why did the author mention the ants in the beginning?

A. Because the experience with the ants presents a sharp contrast to that with the cockroach later.

B. Because the author wants to show her preference to the ants and her dislike for the cockroaches.

C. Because both ants and cockroaches are creepy crawlies that the author dislikes.

D. Because meeting the ants is an unusual experience that the author can hardly forget.

18. The underlined word “insecticide” in Paragraph 2 probably means _____.

A. a kind of fruit juice B. a kitchen knife

C. liquid for killing insects D. cleanser for the bathroom

19. How does the author feel about bugs like cockroaches?

A. The author doesn’t mind the contact with those harmless small creatures.

B. The author prefers cockroaches to ants and feels guilty for killing one.

C. They invade our space and become a threat to humans.

D. They still deserve a place for keeping the balance of the nature.

20. Which of the following is NOT a reason why cockroaches make people’s skin crawl?

A. It looks so strange and different that you can’t accept its appearance.

B. You may relate it to something dirty or disease at the sight of it.

C. It can make you feel sick and cause a strong dislike.

D. They invade our space out of their own will.

21. Which of the following statements about bugs is NOT true according to the passage?

A. Some people may be frightened so much by bugs that it leads to a psychological barrier to some degree.

B. The earth will have a better and cleaner environment if more creepy crawlies are killed.

C. Many bugs are in danger of dying out so we should not kill them due to fear or disgust.

D. Some bugs are extremely unpleasant that some people have a strong wish to destroy them.
