Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure (吸引力) of wonders, the unfailing childlike appetite (渴望) of what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long are you young.

– Samuel Ullman (American businessman, poet,

humanitarian, 1840 – 1924 )

In my ignorance (无知) I had always thought that “fresh air” was infinitely available to us. I had imagined that the dirty air around us somehow escaped into the stratosphere (平流层), and that new air kept coming in – much as it does when we open a window after a party … What is true is that we live in a kind of spaceship called the earth, and only a limited amount of air is forever available to us.

– Sydney Harris (American journalist, 1917–1986)
