D2 1-4 AADC

D3 1-3 BAB

D4 1-4 BCCA

D5 (一)a. extra, college  b. horses, animals

(二)August, decide, fixed, picking, share, store

解析

D1 1-3 CAD

1.  C。 But he said doing it made him wonder why hot water worked better than cold water when washing, and what made soap a good cleaner. He ended up learning why soap and hot water are better for cleaning , and a way to remove oil from water.

When asked his secret to success, he said to keep a science fair project simple at first. “Break down the problem into smaller, manageable steps, so in that way, you will be able to know what you are doing and build on your knowledge gradually.”

D2 1-4 AADC

2.  A。 As you’d expect, the Scandinavian cities are also welcoming to visitors. What doesn’t come to mind is citizens who like to party. The city’s authorities have preserved the attractive wooden houses from the 19th century. Many of these have been made over into restaurants and coffee bars.

The people don’t care about your ethnic background or anything else that some other places might take exception to.以及此句的后半句everyone’s invited to the party.

What’s more, the students were able to best match the faces to the names when the faces they looked at came from within their own culture.

If a name can influence appearance, it can influence many other things and this research opens an important direction that may suggest how parents should consider better the names they give their children,可知研究者认为名字除了影响长相,还会影响其他方面,因此父母在起名字的时候要慎重考虑,因此选BAC选项文中没有提及;D选项和文章表达的意思刚好相反,文章认为我们应该注重名字的含义,慎重起名。

D4 1-4 BCCA

They have had more to do with what people think of my work and of me than anything technical, however.

4. A。 We should try to turn something bad that happens to us into something positive. We have to make time for hard work and we have to trust our feelings. We must never give up.

1. US Teens Learn From Jobs

What do you do during your free time? Travel? Hang out with friends? Well, some American teenagers over the age of 14 get part-time jobs. Their part-time jobs can be babysitting, waiting tables or even working at a movie theater.

But why do teens do this? Some want extra money. Others want to start saving money for college because some US parents may not pay for their children’s tuition. Some teens might want to save money for something big, like buying a car.

Many teens choose to get part-time jobs during the summer holiday. That’s because they are busy studying during the school year.
Having a part-time job is great for any US teen. They get an idea of what the real working world is like. And it gives them skills and experience. That will help them get a full-time job later in life.

2. US Kids Learn to Horse Around

Horses aren’t common in the city of Suffolk, US. But a new program makes them a part of school life for some Huntington Middle School students.
The school began the program two months ago. There are 25 students in the program now. Early last month, these students visited a farm. They learned to clean, feed and ride horses. “The program is, first, to teach students about horses,
said Anthony Hooper, CEO of the program. And it teaches them how to look after animals and be responsible people.”
Ronald Green, a sixth-grader, felt great about the first visit. He hopes for a second.
“It’s nice to take care of something other than ourselves,” Green said. “If we can look after a horse, we can look after our life. That’s amazing.”

(二)US Students Start School

It’s time to go back to school! Are you ready? Let’s see what American students do on the first day of school.
Most Chinese schools start on the same day in September. But US schools don’t. Classes can start any time between August and September. Each school gets to decide when their classes will start. If summers are hot, then school might start a little later.
In American schools, students don’t have fixed classrooms. They can choose their favorite teachers and courses. So before school starts, they spend some time picking their own schedule.
New students to junior high also get their own lockers on the first day of school. Elementary school students in the US have to share them with their classmates. But once they get to high school, they have their own place to store their bags and coats!
