II. 1. all改为both 2. were改为was 3. could改为couldn’t 4. clear后加上that 5. a piano改为the piano 6. gave改为giving 7. if改为when或者as 8. something改为nothing 9. needed改为need 10. about改为for
解析
1. C. 根据We depend upon a good teacher to help us learn the vital skills we need和We couldn’t have doctors, engineers and business leaders without teachers to guide us to acquire the skills needed for those jobs以及Through their role in our lives, they inspire us with great ideas, and they help turn life into an adventure等陈述可知前两段讲述了教师的重要作用。因此选C。
2. B. 第三段中作者拒了John Keating的例子,讲了好老师对于学生的启发作用。因此选B。
3. B. 根据前文Indeed, teachers are there for us, day in, day out, preparing classes, teaching them, setting and marking homework and exams, and always with an eye on how we’re doing individually可知此处this指代的是教师的奉献精神。因此选B。
1. D. 第一段提到了Paul加入的grammar school和Baz加入的secondary modern school,再看后文可知介绍了英国不同的两种学校体系及其演变,因此D项是正确的。
2. B. 根据Today, 90 per cent of children aged 11 to 18 from the same area go to the same school without taking any entry examination可知B项正确。
3. A. 根据The British often disagree about the best way to educate their children可知A项正确。
4. D. 根据最后一段的表述Paul虽然进入了Grammar school并成为了教师,但是其收入并不比后来进入普通学校并且成为工程师的Baz多,作者打趣地调侃道:“so perhaps life is fair after all”。由此可知D项正确。
1. D. 根据However, a recent study carried out by scientists from the University of Liverpool in the UK and the University of Milan in Italy proved this theory wrong可知D项正确。
2. C. 根据It turned out the left-handers outperformed the others when the tasks involved difficult problem-solving. This pattern was particularly clear in male adolescents可知C正确。注意后文虽然提到However, when it came to simple arithmetic (算数), there was no difference between left- and right-handers,但是与C项中的difficult并不冲突。
3. D. 根据It means that there are lots of right-handed people with a similar brain function as left-handers可知D项正确。

M: But I think music can cultivate children’s tastes and make them happy. I believe it even helps them study better.

M: Wow - you’ve been all over the place teaching English and traveling. What took you to the UK?
W: Well, I went to England because I wanted to travel around, so my plan was to work in London for about six months and do some travel during weekends and holidays. But that plan changed when I got such an interesting job in London. I stayed there for nearly five years.
M: What was that interesting job and what were you doing in London?
W: Well, quite accidentally, I ended up working for the British royal family. That was really the last place I expected to end up.
M: That’s amazing.

Learners of English often wonder what the differences between British and American English are. There certainly are several differences, but how important are they?
There are a few differences in grammar. For example, an American might say, “I already ate”, while a Briton would say, “I’ve already eaten.” Pronunciation is sometimes different. Words like “vitamin” and “derby” are pronounced different ways in the UK and US.
There are differences between British and American English in spelling and vocabulary too. For example, “colour” and “honour” are British English, while “color” and “honor” are American English.
These differences in grammar, pronunciation, spelling and vocabulary aren’t important, however. For the most part, British and American English are the same language.
