II. 泛听练习原文:
Middle school kids look to the future
Most of us don’t think about which university we’ll go until we’re at least seniors. Students at Eugene Butler Middle School in Florida, US, however, have already started to think about their future university lives. This year, the school held a program called “Achieving College Together”. The program is designed to help Eugene Butler students learn all about college.
The school invited teachers from colleges and universities. The teachers talked with students about things like how much school will cost, what college life is like and what a higher education is.
“The program is here to help the students have college on their minds early, long before they have to worry about things like their football performance,” said Betty Burney, who works for the program. “We’re going to make sure they graduate and go to college.”
According to Burney, students can meet with the program’s university teachers for more than two hours a week. They can receive advice about school, and life. And, once they graduate from high school, they’ll receive a college scholarship (奖学金).
Eighth-grader Leroy Harrison IV wasn’t sure what he wanted to study in college. But after meeting with the program teachers a few times, he discovered he wants to become a doctor.
Deweyne Robinson, 14, an eighth-grader, said his grades weren’t always great, but he’s working hard this year.
“I didn’t care about my grades before, but this program was fun,” Robinson said. “I hope to go to Bethune-Cookman University. I want to be a military officer (军官).”
