D2:
1. A。根据But now, there’s a new challenge - and this time, no water is involved.
The challenge aims to raise awareness of a rare brain cancer that affects young children.
3. D。根据But today, when so many of us have access to social media, a well-thought out idea can reach and involve many millions of people. 以及The charity challenges, however, show how online culture can bring the world together and give help to the people who most need it.
2. A。根据文章第九段“see to our needs before the needs of others”可知答案为A。
4. B。根据文章最后一段“It’s not enough to look out for our own limits - we must also honor them in others.”
D4:
1. C。从下文“According to the study, the patch, which is located off the coast of California, US, is made up of 79,000 tons of discarded plastic. At 1.6 million square kilometers, it’s over four times the size of Japan, or almost 100 times the size of Beijing.”
2. B。根据文中“This causes problems not only for sea creatures but also for humans.” 根据“According to the study, the patch, which is located off the coast of California, US, is made up of 79,000 tons of discarded plastic. At 1.6 million square kilometers, it’s over four times the size of Japan, or almost 100 times the size of Beijing.”可知A、C不对,由“The swirling ocean currents eventually break down some of the plastic”可知D不对,swirling ocean currents帮助塑料分解,而不是形成。

Dear Mr Patrick,
My name is Li Hua and I’m a 17-year-old girl from Hongxing Middle School. I’m writing to recommend myself for the volunteering work at the English Summer Camp for Kids to be held in the upcoming summer vacation. I believe I’m ideal for such a job because I have a strong preference for language learning, as well as working with kids.
English is my top subject at school. I not only do well in my classes, but also excelled in my school’s English speech contest, where I won first prize this year. I’ve also been leading my school’s English corner for about two years. What’s more, I’ve been to the USA to take part in a summer camp, which helped me build competent communicative skills, as well as an understanding of different cultures. I hope my abilities guarantee that I fit the needs of the volunteering role.
If I were to be given this great opportunity, I promise that I would devote myself to the role with full dedication, patiently and responsibly finishing every task that is assigned to me. Please keep me informed of your decision. I look forward to your earliest reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

W: Good. Do let us know in advance and we’ll try to get you the same room.
M: That would be lovely. It may be quite soon, in fact.
W: Oh? Really?
M: Well. My wife’s attending a conference in the south of the country in a couple of days and I’m on vacation. After the conference, we may continue our travels and come back this way.

M: Yes, it is. I’m really looking forward to working with you. I’m supposed to start next Monday though, but I can’t.
W: Oh, why?
M: I’m visiting my father in Baltimore right now. And because I don’t live in New York, I’ll need a couple of days to find a flat and buy some furniture and move my things from Avon. I guess I could start on Wednesday.

W: Hmm.

W: Yeah, 25 years ago. Look, I just don't want you having a heart attack running up and down the court.
M: So, what are you suggesting? Should I just give up on the idea? I'm not THAT out of shape.
W: Well ... you ought to at least have a physical before you begin. I mean, it HAS been at least five years since you played at all.
M: Well, OK, but …
W: And you need to watch your diet and cut back on the fatty foods, like ice cream. And you should try eating more fresh fruits and vegetables.
M: Yeah, you're probably right.
W: And you should take up a little weight training to strengthen your muscles or perhaps try cycling. Oh, and you need to go to bed early instead of watching TV half the night.

Text 9
M: So, Susan, do you have anything planned this Saturday?
W: Uh, I'm kind of busy. Why do you ask?
M: Oh, I was wondering if you'd like to get together and do something, like catch a movie or take a walk by the lake.
W: I'd love to, but I'm going to be really busy all day on Saturday.
M: What do you have going on that day?
W: First, my mom asked me to help clean the house in the morning, and then I have a dentist appointment at 12:30. I can't miss that 'cause I've canceled twice already.
M: Well, what about after that?
W: Well, I'm going to be running around all day. After the dentist appointment, I need to meet Julie at 2:00 to help her with her science project that's due on Monday morning.
M: OK, but are you free after that?
W: Hardly. I have to pick up my brother from soccer practice at 4:30, and my mom asked me to cook dinner for the family at 5:30. Then I have to clean the dishes and finish reading my history assignment. Who knows how long that’ll take.
M: Wow, sounds like you're going to have a full day. Hey listen, why don't I come over later in the evening, and we can make some popcorn and watch a movie.
W: Oh, that'd be great, but our TV is broken.
M. What? Well, let's just play a game or something.
W: Sounds good, but give me a call before you come. My mom might try to come up with something else for me to do.

Text 10:
The interest in studying abroad, particularly in ESL, is on the rise around the world as students seek to obtain a university degree from traditional or online schools to advance their job opportunities. However, students need to decide if studying abroad will help them reach their objectives.
First, try to determine whether studying abroad will really help you in your future, or if going overseas is just a short-time fad for citizens in your country. Ask people who’ve studied overseas if the experience helped them educationally and financially in the long run.
Second, consider what impact studying abroad will have on your family. Will it be a financial burden to study overseas? What are your family's expectations for you once you return to your country?
Third, think about whether you really are flexible and open-minded enough to endure the challenges of adjusting to a foreign culture. If you feel comfortable with your answers to these questions, then you should go ahead and look into studying abroad in more detail.
