Topic: interests and hobbies
Task 1:
Read aloud the following passage. You will have one minute to prepare and 30 seconds to read.
Having a hobby that we enjoy brings us happiness and enriches our lives. It gives us something fun to do during our leisure time and affords us the opportunity to learn new skills. The best way to cultivate a new hobby is to try something new. The world is full of wonderful, exciting activities that we can explore and adopt as our own. Of course, each of us is unique, and therefore, our interests and hobbies vary.
Task 2:
Answer the following questions:
1. What is your hobby?
I have a lot of hobbies. Some of my hobbies include things like playing video games with my friends and reading books or news articles. It’s hard for me to choose a favorite hobby, though, because I enjoy doing them all for different reasons.
2. Why did you choose it as your hobby?
I chose these as my hobbies because I enjoy doing them. Recently, I have especially loved playing video games with my friends because I get to catch up with them even though they live far away. For reading, I like that I can take the time for myself and explore a whole new world with my imagination.
3. What have you learned from your hobby?
I have learned so many cool and useful things from my hobbies. For example, I have learned the importance of teamwork and communication from playing video games. Being able to effectively communicate with your teammates can help your team win in the game. For reading, you can learn new facts and interesting stories every time you pick up a book or read the newspaper.
4. What are the benefits of having a hobby?
I’ve found that some of the most recognizable benefits of having a hobby are being able to take some time for yourself to relax and destress from your day. Having hobbies is also a great way to meet new and interesting people who share the same interests as you.
5. Some people turn their hobbies into a career. Can you give an example?
To continue with video games, I know that a lot of people have been able to turn their love for gaming into their careers. In addition to the most obvious career path of becoming a professional gamer, people who like video games can also turn their hobby into a career of making new games for other people to enjoy.
Task 3:
You will have one minute to prepare and another minute to talk in at least five sentences about the following pictures. Begin your talk with the sentence given.
Emily shares her road to becoming a writer with us. When Emily was young, she loved to read books with her mom every night before bed. They were always stories about far-away places and exciting adventures. She told her mom that she wanted to become a writer, too. Emily first got into writing short stories and then she wrote longer and longer ones. When Emily was older, she was finally able to get her book published. Emily was able to turn her love of reading and writing into her career.
