TOPIC: Helping others
TASK 2
- Have you ever helped others? What did you do?
- Yes, there have been many times where I have gone out of my way to help others. There was one time in particular where my friend needed help studying for an upcoming exam. She reached out to me asking for help because I had taken the class before. I gave her a helping hand by letting her borrow all of my notes and answering any questions she had about the material.
- How did you feel after lending a helping hand?
- Whenever I am able to help someone in need, I always feel really good about myself for the rest of the day. For example, my friend was able to pass a difficult exam with my help. She was really appreciative of my support and was happy with how helpful I was. Her happiness was really quite infectious. It feels good knowing that you are able to make a difference in the world with just one random act of kindness.
- How do you think helping others affects our society?
- Lending a helping hand is one of the easiest things you can do to improve society as a whole. When you help someone in some way, it will usually turn into a snowball effect, where that person will help someone else, and so on and so forth. For example, if you volunteer at a charity out of the goodness of your heart, you can help dozens of people in your local community, and then those people might end up helping others, too. Even if you just offer to help somebody or do a favor for somebody, it can be very rewarding and make you want to help others more.
- Some claim that nowadays, an increasing number of people are less willing to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
- Some may claim that an increasing number of people nowadays are less willing to help others. However, I wouldn’t agree with this at all. Wherever you go in the world, there will always be kind and warmhearted people who are willing to help others in whatever way they can. There are so many people who devote their time and energy to assisting others and giving aid to those in need. There is nothing more beautiful than someone who goes out of their way to make life better for others.
TASK 3
Li Hua saw several people standing in front of the bulletin board. Li Hua went up to the bulletin board to see what everyone was looking at. On the board, there was a notice asking for students to donate their old baby books to the school’s book drive. The donated books would then be taken to the local charity center to be given to kids in need. Li Hua thought this was a great idea. When Li Hua got home that day, he went through all of the books on his bookshelf and put the ones he wanted to donate in his backpack. The next day at school, Li Hua went with his friend to drop off the books at the school library. Li Hua was so happy when he got an unexpected thank-you letter a week later from the appreciative child who got his old books.
