Text 1

M: We're interested in seeing the room for rent.

W: Oh, how nice! The house isn’t very beautiful but we have bright rooms and it is very peaceful here.

M: That is exactly what we're looking for.

Text 2

W:I'm so bored and have lost interest in everything. How should I kill my free time?

M: Maybe you should try new things, such as reading, singing, dancing or taking pictures.

Text 3

W: How long will your Adult College Entrance Exam last, Jack?

M: For two days. It’ll be done by the end of this June. That’s no more than 15 days from now.

Text 4

W: Dad, there is something wrong with our washing machine and I have lots of clothes that need to be washed. What should I do about it?

M: Ur, I’m busy with my essay. There is a coin-operated washing machine on the first floor. You

can go there.

Text 5

M: Do you only speak English in class, or does your teacher explain everything to you in Spanish?

W: Oh, we never speak Spanish in class! Miss Parker speaks to us only in English. She talks with us in French after class occasionally.

Text 6

W: Hi, Jared, I just heard about your father. How is he?

M: He's in hospital. The doctors will look after him.
W: I'm so sorry to hear that. But it’s a good hospital. I'm sure they will try their best.
M: I hope so.
W: You must feel really worried right now, he is 95.
M: Yeah. I think my mom is the most worried. My brothers and sisters are worried about how she

is doing.
W: Where is she right now?
M: She's in the hospital with my dad. I have to go there tonight.
W: Hey, I’m free tonight. I'll go with you.
M: OK. Let's go right after supper.

Text 7

M: My laptop is very slow.
W: Better buy a new one.
M: Easier said than done. I would do that early if I had that money.
W: Why is it so slow?
M: It is too old and I don’t have the money to repair it.

W: Well, I can give you some if you need it.
M: Thanks a lot. I have already landed a job so I can wait.
W: OK, if you have any problem, just tell me.
M: You are so kind. Thanks again.

Text 8

M: Good morning. Can I see your passport?
W: Here you are.
M: Thank you very much. Are you a tourist or on business?
W: I'm a tourist.
M: That's fine. Have a pleasant stay. Do you have anything to declare?
W: I'm not sure. I have two bottles of whiskey. Do I need to declare them?
M: No, you can have up to three bottles. Have you brought any food with you?
W: Just some cheese I bought in France.

M: I'm afraid I'll have to take that.
W: Why? It's just some cheese.
M: Unfortunately, you are not allowed to bring cheese into the country. I'm sorry.
W: That's strange! Oh well. Here you are.
M: Thank you. Anything else?
W: I bought a sweater for my daughter and a T-shirt for my son.
M: That's fine. Have a nice day.
W: You, too.

Text 9

W: Hello, Jack, how are you!

M: I’m doing good, and you?

W: I’m all fine, I’m just wondering what you are thinking of choosing as a career when you grow up?

M: I’m dreaming of becoming a video game designer. Computer games are what I'm most interested in, and I wouldn’t feel happy in a different career.

W: It’s great that you’re going for something that you like and not just what others tell you to do.

M: Thanks, I’m lucky that my parents don’t force me into a career. What about yours?

W: Well, I don’t want a job in IT or as a lawyer. To tell you the truth, I want to be a nurse so I can fight COVID-19, but my parents want me to be a teacher. It’s hard for me to choose my career. I wish my parents would agree with me.

M: Oh, I think your parents will understand you. The key is to insist on your choice. But you need to present yourself gently.

W: Sure. I’ll do that right away. I must be off now. See you tomorrow.

M: Good luck! See you.

Text 10

M: I had my first hiking experience on Jade Dragon Snow Mountain with my friend when I went to Yunnan. This was the first time I have traveled so far without my parents. I was very excited and discussed the plan with my friend almost every week leading up to the trip. Unfortunately, not everything went according to plan. When we arrived at Lijiang, the weather was not good. It was cloudy and we could barely see the mountain. My friend and I decided to book a tour to our destination.
The next morning, we started off with our guide and driver. We passed a lake on our way to the mountain. The lake was beautiful and there were lots of wild animals.

At the foot of the mountain, we could only see dark soil and blue sky. When we arrived at an altitude of about 3,800 meters, I started to feel a bit sick. This made it hard to enjoy the view. The guide gave me some advice. He said, “Focus on your steps rather than how far you have to climb.” It was not easy, but the experience was unforgettable. It was nice to see the valley from up above when we finished the hike.
In 10 days, we climbed the mountain, visited lots of ancient towns and traveled to Xishuangbanna. It is hard to say which part was the best. Experiences like this are why it’s so fun to travel.
