Text 1

W: Could you pick up a gallon of milk on your way home?
M: Sure. Is there anything else you need from the market? Sugar? Eggs?
W: No, nothing else.
M: OK. I’ll be home in an hour.

Text 2

M: I forgot my wallet. Could I borrow some money?

W: Well, how much do you need?

M: $15.

W: Now, you owe me another $15.

M: Did I borrow $15 before?

W: Yes. You haven’t paid me back yet.

Text 3

M: So, how is your new roommate?

W: She really annoys me.

M: What happened?

W: She’s always making loud noises at midnight.

Text 4

W: Have you been working out lately?

M: Yeah, as a matter of fact, I’ve been going to the gym recently. I do an hour of aerobics every day. I tell you, it’s addictive! I feel like a new man!

W: I can tell. You look really strong! And no more beer belly!

Text 5

M: Hi, Kat, haven’t seen you for a long time. I heard you moved out of town.

W: Yeah, we’ve been looking for a house recently, and we finally found one we like in the suburbs.

M: Right, I get that. You should come over for dinner sometime. I’ve got to run but send me a text if you’re free this weekend or the next.

W: Yeah, sure!

Text 6

W: Hey John. Did you have lunch?
M: No, I don’t have time.
W: Do you have a soccer game with your friends?

M: No, I have a big math exam today at 1 pm.

W: You still need to eat something, or you won’t have energy for the exam.

M: I know. I’ll grab something on the way to class.
W: Fast food?
M: Yeah, I’ll pick up a burger.
W: That’s not healthy. Let me cook something.
M: Thanks. But I am in a hurry.
W: Let me pack you some fruits, apples, grapes, bananas and
M: I’ll take this banana. It’s easy to eat. See you later, Mom.
W: Eat something nutritious!

Text 7

M: Hi there, I want to reserve a room.
W: No problem. May I have your name, please?
M: Of course. I’m John Snow.
W: Hi, Mr Snow. Could you tell me when you need the room?
M: I plan to stay in May from 14th to 17th for three nights.
W: A double room or a single room?
M: A single room.
W: Perhaps you didn’t know that we have new room rates.
M: How much is a single room?
W: The price per night is $130. Do you find that acceptable, sir?
M: That sounds fine to me.
W: Fantastic! Would you like a smoking or nonsmoking room?
M: I hate cigarettes! Nonsmoking.
W: OK. That’ll be nonsmoking.

Text 8

W: Dad, can you help me with my school project?
M: Sure, Jenny. What is your assignment?
W: We have to make a building using any materials around the house.
M: What were you thinking about building?
W: I want to build a skyscraper.
M: That should be fun. Any ideas on the materials?
W: I’m not sure. There are so many to choose from, mineral water bottles, plastic bags and paper boxes.

M: Maybe using cardboard boxes is a good idea. We have a lot of old boxes. I saved them after we moved here.
W: Where are they?
M: They’re in the garage. Help me bring them into the house.
W: OK. Where should we put them? In the yard?
M: Let’s put them in the living room. It’s the biggest room in the house. There’s plenty of space for us to do crafts.
W: Mom isn’t going to be happy. Last time, Mom shouted at me for leaving the kitchen in a mess.
M: That’s OK. She can help us too.
W: OK. What should I do first?
M: Why don’t you design the skyscraper first and then we can make it.
W: That’s a good plan. Thanks for your help, Dad.

M: It’s my pleasure. I’m an architect. Building is my specialty.

Text 9

W: Hi, I’m Janet Smith in apartment 23. Is this the apartment manager?
M: Yes. What can I do for you?

W: My living room window is broken.
M: Are you serious? Do you know what happened?
W: I don’t know, because I wasn’t there when it happened.
M: Who do you think might have broken the window?
W: Something tells me it might be some of the kids in this building.
M: Why?
W: I found a baseball near the broken glass. I also saw them in the parking lot just before I went out.
M: Do you know any of them?
W: No, I didn’t pay any attention to who they were.
M: I’ll call the window repairman, but it’ll probably take a couple of days.
W: I could get a quick service if I call a friend of mine.
M: I don’t have a problem with that. Let me look at the damage first.
W: OK, I’m waiting for you. Who should my friend give the bill to?

M: Since the kids broke it, you can ask their parents to pay for that.
W: Whew! I was worried that I would have to pay for it. Thank you. Bye.

Text 10

W: Why do people invent things? Where do ideas for inventions come from? There’s a saying that “Necessity is the mother of invention.” This means that people invent things because there is a problem that they want to solve.

In 1912, Otto Frederick Rohwedder had an idea. He wanted to invent a machine that could slice a whole loaf of bread. He built his first bread slicer in 1917, but it was destroyed in a fire. In 1927 he had enough money to build another one. He then realized he had a problem - the bread became stale after it was cut. He then had another idea, to build a bread slicer that sliced the bread and then wrapped it, so that it wouldn’t get stale so quickly.

Hacky Sack or Footbag is a fun sport that was invented by John Stalberger and Mike Marshall. In 1972 Mike Marshall made a small beanbag and kicked it in the air with his foot for fun. That same year John Stalberger had knee surgery. His knee exercises after surgery were boring so he looked for a more fun way to exercise. He and Mike shared ideas and the game of Hacky Sack was born.

Society needs inventors. Our lives are better because inventors are problem solvers. Think of a problem. Can you invent something to solve it?

2021-22学年高二版第39期总第869III口语直通车答案

Task 2:

  • Why is teamwork so important?
  • Teamwork is important because working together with others in a team allows you to be more creative in achieving your goals by exposing you to new ideas from people with different backgrounds and experiences. This gives you a fresh look at difficult problems. It can also help you to be more efficient and productive because it makes you think outside the box to solve problems from a different angle. Teamwork is essential in today’s world because teamwork offers many opportunities for you to grow by expanding your skillsets and enriching your knowledge by discovering fresh ideas from others. This ultimately helps to broaden your horizons and gives you a better understanding of the world around you.
  • What are the keys to teamwork?
  • The keys to teamwork include cooperating with others, having mutual respect for your teammates and their ideas, and believing in one another to do the right thing. Being a member of a team means encouraging diversity, supporting friendships and unity, and giving recognition to others when even the smallest milestone is met. Essentially, a team is where people work together to achieve a common goal. And, if everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.
  • What are the challenges of teamwork?
  • Although working in a team can help to boost productivity and encourage you to be more open to different ideas, there are still some challenges when working in a team. For example, some members may not be as willing to put in their fair share of work. Or, for instance, you may tell your team about an idea you have, but others speak over you or dismiss your idea. When these kinds of difficulties arise, it is important to remember to communicate with your teammates. A good team will work together to overcome any challenges to achieve success.
  • Can you share your experience of studying or working in a team?
  • There have been many times where I have worked in a team. For school, many of these experiences were from working on big group projects. Most of the time, I took on a majority of the work because I cared a lot about my grades. However, some people in the group were more relaxed and didn’t worry too much about the group project. I was frustrated because it felt like they were lazy and didn’t do any work on purpose. Once I communicated with them how I felt and that we should all work together as a team, I felt a lot better for speaking my mind and trying to solve the problem in a constructive way.

Task 3:

Li Hua and his classmates decided to take part in a robot competition as a team. First, they went to the library to check out some books on robots. Li Hua would look for the books on the bookshelf, another teammate would bring the books to the table, and the last teammate looked for important information in the books. After the library closed, Li Hua invited his teammates to his house to do more research on his computer. They watched videos that taught them how to build different kinds of robots. The next day, Li Hua went to his teammate’s house to build the robot they would use in the competition. On the day of the competition, Li Hua and his team ended up winning because they all worked together and believed in each other. They were all very happy. They even decided to join next year’s robot competition, too!
