Dear Simon,
I’m sorry to inform you that your application to join the Chinese Painting Club has been turned down because the club has already recruited enough members.
Considering you are fascinated by Chinese culture, I highly recommend the Calligraphy Club, one of the top three clubs in our school. Calligraphy has always been an important part of the history of the Chinese people, and the club can give you a deeper insight into Chinese culture and the spirit of the Chinese. I’m sure it will be a fruitful experience for you.
I hope my recommendation can be of some help to you.

Yours,
Li Hua

第二节

When Joan looked out the window, she saw a car approaching. She waved to the driver and shouted loudly. Fortunately, the car stopped, and an old lady got out of the car. She said, “What’s going on, dear?” Joan explained the whole accident in detail. The lady said, “I will go home and ask my husband to help you. He is good at fixing cars.” Joan looked at the lady in disbelief, not believing her husband would come. However, she had no choice. Finally, she watched the old lady’s car slowly disappear at the end of the road.

Joan saw clouds in the sky, and it began to rain. The only thing they could do was to stay in the car. The sky was getting darker, but no one came. Joan was worried. Suddenly, one small shining light popped up, and a man appeared. He said, “I’m here to help you.” “He is the old lady’s husband,” Joan cried, not believing what she saw. He didn’t have to offer help, but he volunteered to come anyway. He quickly replaced the tire, and the car started again. The family thanked the man and went to their relatives’ house. Whenever Joan recalls this experience, she always feels warm and thankful.

听力原文与答案解析:

第一部分 听力原文
Text 1
W: I’ve been taking piano lessons for five years now, but I don’t enjoy them anymore.
M: That's a shame. You’re also not in the singing club anymore.
W: I used to be into it, but now I prefer the chess club

Text 2
W: Excuse me, sir. Can you tell me where Dr Brown’s Office is?
M: It’s on the sixth floor, but the lift only goes to the fifth. You’ll have to use the stairs to reach it. It is the eighth room on the right.

Text 3
W: Look at this dress. It makes me feel so short, and I’m worried that it makes me look old.
M: Don’t worry. It looks beautiful. You would look good in anything. I’m sure everyone at the party will agree.

Text 4
M: I’ve just seen this film for the fourth time.
W: That’s nothing. I’ve seen it eight times!

Text 5
M: I've heard that the exhibition in the museum contains works of art from all over the world.
W: Yeah. I saw it yesterday. It’s well worth a visit.

Text 6
W: Congratulations on getting your first car! Who taught you how to drive?
M: My father. He used to collect old cars, but now he just has a couple of sports cars that he drives on the weekends.
W: Do you think he’ll let you drive any of them?
M: I sure hope so! But I don’t think I’m quite ready for that. Maybe one day.
W: Driving should be as simple as possible, in my opinion.
M: Yeah, but it should also be fun! Anyway, are you ready? Let’s drive to the beach!
W: OK, I just need to get my sunglasses from your living room. I must have left them there at breakfast.

Text 7
M: You're up early, Lisa!
W: Yes, I’m so nervous about my test today.
M: Well, honey, it’s only 7:00 am. You have two more hours before you need to be at school. Why don’t you take a break from studying and have breakfast with me? You need to eat well so that your mind will be fresh. How can you think on an empty stomach?
W: You’re right—I can’t! What are we having, Dad?
M: We’re going to have the most satisfying morning food—porridge.
W: That’s perfect. I want fish porridge. Fish is good for the brain.
M: Good choice! You’re going to do great today!

Text 8
M: The gym at our school is great, isn’t it?
W: It is. But I’m curious about one thing: Why are some of the rooms painted different colors?
M: Which ones?
W: The weight room is painted blue, this locker room is painted red and the other locker room is pink. It’s strange.
M: Oh, I see. It’s not really strange. You see, colors affect our moods. People are usually more productive in blue rooms, so we painted the weight room blue to help us work out.
W: How about red and pink?
M: Red increases the heart rate and makes things feel more intense. And pink calms people down. So while our team gets ready and energized in the red room, the other team feels too relaxed!

Text 9
M: You look pale. Are you ill or just tired because of your schoolwork?
W: I am very nervous. I know that going to university is a wonderful opportunity for me, but I can’t help worrying about it.
M: I can understand that, but I think you will really enjoy it when you get there.
W: Yes, but London is such a long way away. If I were studying in Beijing, I could have asked for your help with any problems.
M: But it was your first choice, and New York was your second. Both are a long way away.
W: I know, but I didn't think of how much I'd miss you and mom.
M: Don't worry, it's not too bad being far away from home these days. In the past, we would have had to communicate by letter or phone call.
W: Yes, I am so glad we have the internet. We might even talk to each other more than we do at home!

Text 10
W: I have a small shop. It sells groceries and things that local people might want in an emergency. Many of the items I sell are things you can get at the supermarket. They might be more expensive here, but my shop is more convenient. One day, a little girl came into the shop. She put a plastic coin on the counter and asked for a bar of chocolate. She said that it was for her mom’s birthday. I stared at the girl. I must have looked puzzled because then she put a tiny toy horse and a plastic bracelet on the counter. I realized that the little girl had no money, but she was offering me her most precious possession. I felt pity for this charming little girl and didn’t want to disappoint her. So, I handed her a large bar of chocolate. She thanked me and turned to leave, but I called her back. I returned the toy horse and told her it was her change. I felt very happy that day.
