Dear Tom,

How are you doing these days? I know you have a passion for volunteering, so I would like to invite you to join our visit to a nursing home this weekend.

We are planning to leave for the nursing home at 8 am and will wrap up our visit around 6 pm.

The main activity will be organizing a singing festival. First, we will put on a performance, singing Beijing Shine on Golden Hill to warm up and lighten the mood. After that, the residents will each pick a song to sing in front of others. Then they will sing a song together. Finally, we will all pose for a photo.

I hope this event can help spice up the residents’ lives. I am really looking forward to your participation.

Yours,

Li Hua

第二节(One possible version

At a loss for words, he sheepishly held out his muffin to the stranger as an apology. However, the furious and impatient man turned the blueberry muffin away. Michael’s face turned red, and he didn’t dare look the man in the eye. “Sir, I am terribly sorry, but I didn’t mean to offend you. What can I do to compensate you?” At that embarrassing moment, Michelle stepped out from behind the counter. “I can really relate to you, sir, and I strongly recommend this muffin, which will cheer you up a bit.” Unwillingly, the man took a bite. To everyone’s surprise, his face softened. “Well, well, since the muffin is so delicious, I forgive you,” the man mumbled, “but never again.”

Michelle and Michael started to laugh. Grateful for getting him out of trouble and impressed by her warm heart, Michael turned to Michelle and said, “Thank you so much.” “No worries,” replied Michelle, beaming a warm smile at him. Staring at her glowing face, Michael suddenly had an impulse to ask her out for lunch again. Mustering his courage, he stepped forward and finally asked, “Do you have time to go for lunch with me today?” An expression of amazement and understanding flashed across Michelle’s face. “Yes!” In the bath of soft light, two hearts got closer.

Text 1

W: What was that loud boom?

M: There was a chemical explosion a few blocks away.

W: Did anyone get hurt?

M: Yeah, over 50 people were injured.

W: Do we need to get out of the building?

M: Yes! Don’t take the elevator.

Text 2

W: Today is my mom’s birthday.

M: What are you going to get her?

W: Flowers and a card.

M: Look! What about that handbag?

W: It’s too expensive.

M: I can lend you some money.

Text 3

M: What are we going to eat for dinner?

W: I’m going to fix up some pork chops.

M: I’m afraid the meat is rotten.

W: That’s strange! I just bought it the day before yesterday.

M: Well, I forgot to put it in the refrigerator.

Text 4

W: Hey, you look concerned. What’s on your mind?

M: The final exam. I’m not fully prepared yet.

W: Well, don’t worry too much. You still have time to cram things into your brain anyway.

M: Yeah, but three days will fly past in a wink.

Text 5

M: I need a new job because my current job doesn’t pay enough.

W: Are you having money problems?

M: Yeah. I don’t have enough money for bills and rent.

W: But you drive a nice car and wear expensive things.

M: I need those things.

W: You are spoiled. I don’t think you need expensive things. You just want them.

Text 6

W: Ethan, get ready. We’re going to your grandparents’ house for dinner.

M: Again? We went there last weekend. Why not go to a Chinese restaurant?

W: Well, remember we visit them every Sunday evening.

M: But grandma’s food tastes weird.

W: Don’t be rude. She loves to cook for us.

M: I know. I love them. But she always makes the same meal, chicken pot pie and roast beef.

W: Your grandfather likes it. It’s his favorite, so we’re going to eat it too.

M: Ok, Mom. Sorry for being rude.

W: Why don’t we pick up a dessert on the way to their house?

M: Ok! Can we get ice cream?

W: Sure. We can make ice cream sundaes after dinner.

M: Mom, that’s funny.

W: What’s funny?

M: Sundaes on Sundays.

W: That is funny. This will be our new tradition.

M: Grandpa will love it. He loves ice cream too.

Text 7

M: Hi Jerry! Welcome back from summer vacation. Did you have a good time in Hawaii?

W: Yes, I did. It was everything I expected, and more. How about you? Did you go anywhere?

M: Yes, as a matter of fact, I did. I spent a week in New York. I think my company will make me move there.

W: Ah, New York -- such a wonderful city! You’ll really enjoy living there.

M: Hmm ... I’m not so sure. New York has a lot going for it, but I prefer living here in Chicago.

W: There are definitely good things about New York though.

M: Yeah. New York is the business center, so there are lots of jobs, and there’s always something new. It’s more modern than Chicago.

W: Why would you want to stay in Chicago?

M: For one thing, Chicago has its endless food options. For another, life here is easier. Tasks like grocery shopping, purchasing new furniture and traveling to the airport are even easier when you have a car on your hands.

W: That’s for sure.

Text 8

W: The traffic is really getting bad these days.

M: I agree. I sat in traffic for two hours last night.

W: I’ve started to leave work late just to beat rush hour traffic.

M: I wish I could do that. I have to pick up my son before the daycare closes.

W: Oh, I see. What time does the daycare close?

M: 6 o’clock.

W: What time do you usually get there?

M: Just a few minutes before they close.

W: What happens if you’re late?

M: They will wait with the child, of course. But you have to pay extra.

W: Have you ever been late?

M: Yeah, a few times. I was late yesterday. I don’t want to pay extra. Daycare is already expensive.

W: Yeah, I’m sure it is. Do you have other people who can help you?

M: No, I just listen to the traffic report and leave earlier if the roads sound bad.

W: Is our boss understanding?

M: Yeah, she’s very understanding. She has children too.

Text 9

W: Hey Steve. My family and I want to do something fun this weekend. Do you have any suggestions?

M: The weather is going to be nice. You should do something outdoors.

W: Yeah, it’s supposed to be sunny all weekend.

M: How about a picnic at the park?

W: We do that often. I want to do something more fun.

M: How about the city zoo? I heard that bear cubs were recently born there.

W: That’s a good idea. We haven’t been to the zoo for a long time.

M: Then you should definitely go this weekend.

W: The last time we were there, it started raining. None of the animals wanted to come out.

M: That must’ve been boring.

W: It was boring. The kids wanted to go home early.

M: The animals should be more visible since the weather is going to be sunny this weekend.

W: Yeah. I think we will go to the zoo. Hopefully, this time it’ll be more fun.

M: Actually, I have four tickets to the zoo. You can have them. Our family won’t be able to go. The tickets expire this weekend.

W: Thanks, Steve! Let me pay you for them. Zoo tickets are expensive.

M: Don’t worry about it. It’s my gift to you since your last visit was not fun.

W: Are you sure? This is very generous of you.

M: Also, you mowed my lawn a few times after I had back surgery last year. I really appreciated that.

Text 10

M: As children, our crazy imaginations wander into what certain adventures would be like, but as we get older, we soon forget about those dreams and get caught up in our everyday lives. However, the storyline goes a little differently for Jordan Romero.

Jordan Romero is an amazing teenager who has climbed seven of the highest and most challenging mountains on seven continents. When Jordan was a very young boy, he had seen a painting hanging in his school depicting the seven continents’ highest peaks, including Mount Qomolangma, and dreamed of going there. In 2006 when he was 10, he climbed his first mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. He is the youngest person in the world to do this. And at the age of 13, he climbed Mount Qomolangma. In 2011, when he was 15, he climbed the last of the seven mountains, a mountain in Antarctica.

Jordan, who lives in California, wants to help other kids reach their goals, so he started a group called Find Your Everest. He has spoken publicly at a number of schools and now through social media. Jordan wants to use his first-hand experiences to inspire kids all over the world to get outside, and accomplish their dreams regardless of how impossible they may seem.
