2022-23学年第7期总第787期高三II版参考答案
III. A. 1. 1) inspiration; 2) pretended; 3) attention; 4) curiosity;
5) brush; 6) effort; 7) human nature/action
2. From how Tom’s trick turns out, it is revealed that a man or a boy would always covet a thing that’s difficult to attain and that we can tell “work” from “play” by whether it’s something we are obliged to do.
The author introduces these morals from a third-person omniscient point of view (第三人称全知视角) in a witty and satirical (讽刺的) way, which is shown by “... without knowing it – namely ...” and “If he had been a great and wise philosopher, like the writer of this book ...”. The author’s perceptive insights into human nature are thus incorporated in the story.
B.
Tom’s actions |
Tom’s inner feelings and thoughts |
① Tom appeared on the sidewalk with a bucket of whitewash and a long‑handled brush. |
He felt miserable having to work. |
② He took up his brush and went tranquilly to work. |
He felt calm, waiting for his “prey”. |
③ Tom went on whitewashing – paid no attention to the steamboat. |
He should stay focused on the whitewashing before Ben came to him to arouse Ben’s curiosity. |
④ Tom resumed his whitewashing, and answered carelessly ... ⑤ The brush continued to move. |
He had to continue his play-acting to make Ben intrigued by the whitewashing. |
⑥ Tom swept his brush daintily back and forth – stepped back to note the effect – added a touch here and there – criticized the effect again ... |
He needed to act harder to lure Ben in, making the whitewashing an irresistible temptation for Ben. |
⑦ Tom gave up the brush with reluctance in his face, but alacrity in his heart. |
His plan worked, and he could enjoy the apple and leisure time. |
The depiction of these actions is a vivid portrayal of a naughty and cunning (狡猾的) boy who comes up with an original idea that makes a chore look like a privilege, by which he spares himself the dull work and enjoys a great time watching others work for him. Through Tom’s play-acting we can see how a clever boy applies the law of human nature, though unconsciously, how he appears to be a natural leader, and how he jumps out of social norms.
IV. 1. B; 2. A
In the first example, the four actions were done in a consecutive order so smoothly, depicting how good Tom was at his play-acting, that it may be easy for anyone to fall for it. Actions in the second example help construct in graphic detail a vivid image of a complacent (自鸣得意的) and naughty boy in readers’ minds.

M: Hi. I’d like to extend my stay for two more nights, please.
W: Alright. So, two more nights, plus the night you already stayed on September 14?
M: Yes. And can you check whether there are any other single rooms available? The room I’m in now is too close to the elevator, and it’s on the second floor. I was woken up by noise from the street.
W: Oh, I’m sorry about that. Well, there are only two other single rooms: one doesn’t have a window; the other has a view of the garden but costs an additional $10 per night. Would you still like to change rooms?

W: Well, would you prefer a smoking or a non-smoking room?
M: Non-smoking, please.
W: OK, we do have a few rooms available on the 20th; we’re full on the 22nd, unless you would be OK with a smoking room.
M: Well, how much is a non-smoking room on the 20th?
W: It’s $80, plus the 10% room tax.
M: OK, that’ll be fine.
W: All right. Could I have your name, please?
