IV. A Possible Version

Now, we couldn’t keep them, but we also couldn’t take them back. What a dilemma! All this time, we had been fostering them out of love, hadn’t we? Or had we been fattening (养肥) them for a fancy meal indeed? Never did I imagine that the joy and fellowship we had would come to a brutal (残酷的) breakup. Plus, I didn’t have the heart to tell Leo to accept such a miserable fate for his beloved ducklings. Dreadfully guilty, I launched a sort of duck-adoption agency, desperately emailing and calling animal shelters in the hope of finding them a safe home.

I was losing hope when I received an email from a woman who lived on a hobby farm. She was looking for more ducks, and she was vegetarian, which made her a perfect candidate. We carefully packed everything for our ducks before heading to their new home. As we entered the hobby farm, I felt as if we had slipped into a fairy tale: bunnies hopping around sunlit grass, miniature horses trotting (小跑) on the rich pasture (牧场), and grown-up ducks wandering about with their white feathers dancing against summer clouds. Reluctant and rejoiced at the same time, we left our ducks for this dream home.

Writing checklist

The following is for your reference.

A hopeless mood is created in paragraph 1, which is shown by paragraph 2 starting with “I was losing hope when ...” To make the reader feel the despair, the writer employs two questions in paragraph 1, followed by an inverted sentence (倒装句). The mood here is created through diction.

In paragraph 2, a joyful mood is created since the writer considers the adoption to be “most delightful”. To create a happy mood, the writer adopts the tool of imagery, presenting us with a lovely farm with “bunnies hopping around sunlit grass, miniature horses trotting on the rich pasture, and grown-up ducks wandering about with their white feathers dancing against summer clouds”.

Who would not love a farm like this? Therefore there’s no doubt that the adoption was a “delightful” one.
