IV. A Possible Version
He would probably always be able to afford shoes, but she probably never would. Under his seat, he pried the toe of one shoe into the heel of the other and slipped it off. Then the other shoe. Yes, he would be walking in the snow with bare feet! When the bus stopped at the end of the line, Frank waited until everyone else had emptied off. Then he reached under his seat and picked up his basketball shoes. He walked quickly up to the woman and handed them to her, looking down and saying, “Here, lady, you need these more than I do.”
He then hurried to the door when he heard the woman exclaim, “Thank you, young man.” The driver was calling, “Hey, come back here, kid! What’s your name?” Frank turned around to face him, his cheeks burning. “Frank Daily,” he answered quietly. “Well, Frank, ” said the driver, “I’ve never seen anything like this in the 20 years I’ve been driving this bus.” The woman was crying. “Thank you. I felt people like me were ‘invisible’,” she said. Frank smiled at the woman, mumbling, “It’s no big deal.” He hurried off. On his way home, he hardly felt the cold beneath his feet at all.
Study the version above and think:
1. What happened between the two “invisible” people? How did they feel in the end?
2. What methods are employed to develop the theme?
The following is for your reference.
Frank decided to give away his new Nike basketball shoes although “he would be walking in the snow with bare feet”. A conflict is created to highlight the boy’s generosity. And the new Nike basketball shoes were then a symbol of his kindness.
On his way home, Frank “hardly felt the cold beneath his feet at all” while at the beginning of the story, Frank felt that “it was another cold, gray day”. The cold serves as a symbol of his suffering, which finally disappeared.
The woman was deeply moved by Frank’s kindness, saying, “I felt people like me were ‘invisible’”. The word “invisible”, the motif, recurs for a third time and reinforces the theme.
The story has a happy ending. The two “invisible” people both felt warm.
