2. Paul admitted his mistake and won the forgiveness of the Thompsons.

3. His guilt about stealing reached breaking point. After returning the money, he felt relieved.

IV. Possible version:

“Boys, I baked a chocolate cake,” Mrs Thompson walked into the garage. Catching sight of Mrs Thompson, the two froze with fear and followed her step with racing hearts. A few minutes later, they were served with large slices of cake. Delicious as the cake was, they didn’t have any appetite (胃口). Mrs Thompson seemed to notice something was wrong, “Boys, do you like the cake?” Paul nodded with his eyes dropping to avoid any eye contact and growing guilt (内疚) crept into his heart.

When they were about to leave, Mrs Thompson handed Paul a brand-new bat and glove. Paul looked at them, his face blushing with shame. “Th ... thanks so much.” Voice trembling, Paul then bravely poured out everything about the envelope and gave back the money he hid before, apologizing for his stealing. However, Mrs Thompson, instead of boiling with anger, came up to Paul, and said gently: “Oh, thank you for helping me find the envelope. I totally forgot where I had put it.” In that split time, it dawned on him that what really matters is simple honesty and simple kindness.

Review

1. How does the author display Paul’s emotional development?

Faced with the chocolate cake and a gift, Paul was more nervous and guilty than ever before. After admitting his mistake, he was finally relieved. To display his emotional development, different kinds of writing techniques are adopted. Apart from the description of actions, the use of direct speech and facial expressions, two other techniques are applied in the continued part: the description of the feeling, and contrast.

Here are the examples.

* .. with racing hearts (Para. 1) Description of the feeling

* Delicious as the cake was, they didn’t have the appetite at all. (Para. 1) Contrast

* Paul nodded with his eyes dropping to avoid any eye contact. (Para. 1) Description of actions

* “Th ... thanks so much.” (Para. 2)    Direct speech

2. How does emotional development contribute to the theme?

To shape the character, emotional development is organized in the continued part of the story. Take Paul as an example. He was consumed with nervousness and guilt, which led to his full realization of honesty -- the theme of this story.
