Text 10

M: We all admire the talent of a skilled musician. It always takes a long time to reach the highest levels of performance. But they say it’s never too late to learn. So what are the benefits, for both children and adults, of learning a musical instrument? For children, learning to play a musical instrument can improve hearing. Moreover, it could also have some academic benefits. A study found that students who engaged in music-related activities during grades 7-12 scored significantly higher in science and math. As for adults, if you could play an instrument, you can join a band or orchestra, which in turn improves your social life. You will never feel lonely together with a bunch of friends. So, whether you’re looking to destress yourself, or improve your grades at school, maybe taking up an instrument could help.

  • One possible version

I am Li Hua, for whom you kindly agreed to provide accommodation during the study tour. I am writing this email to enquire about the essential details of my stay.
To start with, I know the school is about a 15-minute’s drive from your home. I was wondering if there’s a subway station or a bus stop nearby so that it would be more convenient for me to travel each day. What’s more, will there be access to the internet in my room? I have promised my parents to contact the school frequently. On top of that, I would appreciate it if you could guide me around the city during the weekends.
Finally, I’d like to thank you again for providing a cozy home. Please send me the details concerning my questions when it is convenient.

  • One possible version

When she approached him and said hello, he did not react. The man was in his 40s, wearing a light jacket and a pair of trainers which were obviously not for this kind of weather or trail. Taking a deep breath, Bales got closer and checked his pulse, but there was barely any sign of life. It suddenly dawned on her that the man must have passed out because of the extreme cold and that she had to wake him up immediately or the dreadful weather could put him in great danger. Out of her bag, Bales took a carpet to wrap the man, gave some hot water to him, called out repeatedly and shook him hard. It didn’t take long before the man came to himself. He tried to say “thank you” but was too weak to talk.

After waking the man up, Bales recognized that they had to get out of there soon. The wind kept howling with the heavy sleet driving fiercely, and even worse, darkness began to fall. Anxious, Bales helped the man up, supporting his weight and inching along the trail. Fortunately, she could follow the tracks left by her hiking boots. The two stumbled with great efforts but Bales never lost heart. She kept encouraging herself, “Keep going. You are doing great!” After what seemed like ages, they finally made it to the foot of the mountain. The man was rushed to hospital at once. Exhausted as she was, Bales felt a wave of happiness surge through her body for saving the man.
