B. 1. Oliver is an innocent boy with a pure heart who always believes the best in people. He doesn’t have much experience of the world and seems too naive and easily tricked by a cunning (狡猾的) man like Fagin.

Reflected through his own actions, speech and thoughts:

Thoughts: “Oliver wondered why the old man lived in such an old, dirty place, when he had so many watches, but then he thought that it must cost Fagin a lot of money to look after the Dodger and the other boys”; “... though Oliver saw nothing funny in his answer ...”; “Oliver wondered what the connection was between playing at stealing from the old gentleman’s pocket and becoming a great man.”

Speech & Actions: “‘Very good,’ said Oliver”; “ ... Oliver laughed until the tears ran down his face ...”; “‘Yes, sir,’ said Oliver.”; “Oliver held up the bottom of the pocket with one hand, as he had seen the Dodger hold it ...”; “‘Here it is, sir,’ said Oliver, showing it in his hand.”; “But he followed him quietly to the table and was soon deeply involved in his new study.”

Reflected through others’ reactions to his behaviors:

The others: The others all started laughing ...

Fagin: “Take my advice, my dear ...”; ‘“You’re a clever boy, my dear,’ said the old gentleman, putting his hand on Oliver’s head.”; ‘“I’ve never seen a quicker boy ...’” (Fagin appeared to be nice and cared for Oliver only because Oliver seemed trusting and could be tricked easily.)

2. He is a greedy (贪婪的) and cunning man who leads a life of lying and deceit (欺骗). He cares for Oliver and the other young boys only to take advantage of them, taking them only as tools to accumulate (积累) wealth for himself.

2022-23学年第30期总第900期高一III版参考答案

Task 2

  1.  What habit has helped you stay focused in class?

Being generally well-organized has helped me focus in class. With a different book for each subject and a routine system for writing and highlighting my notes, I can make sure I take in all the necessary information. This has also helped train me to pick out the most important information from classes and then include this in my note-taking system.

  1. How did you overcome your bad study habits?

I overcame my bad study habits by removing all distractions. By placing my desk in a calm and quiet area at home I have made sure no one can disturb me. I also lock away my phone so I can’t be easily contacted by others or distracted by social media. This way, I can fully focus on my studies.

  1. Do you prefer to study alone or in groups? Why?

I much prefer to study alone. This allows me to keep my study environment quiet. When studying in a group, there is a tendency for restlessness as a group of people would rather do something fun. This can lead to bad study outcomes. However, sometimes talking to group members can be useful for practicing repeating information learned which helps us secure it in our memories. In these group work settings, strict discipline is required to stay on task.

  1. How do you usually prepare for an exam?

I prepare for exams by making an intricate study plan well ahead of time. By separating my days out so that I can fully focus on all my subjects, reducing stress before the big exam days. I then try to work hard to read all of the course material I have covered and then transform that information into a piece of work that can help me keep information in my memory. For example. Creating posters with key information for subjects is very useful and placing them in areas where they are easy to see acts as a constant reminder. However, at the end of the day, the best way to study for exams is to practice. This means sitting down with past papers and treating them as if they are the real thing.

Task 3

Failing his mid-term exam, Li Hua reflected on his study habits. It dawned on him that the cause of his bad results was a bad attitude to learning which meant he didn’t fully focus in class. Outside of the classroom, instead of treating schoolwork seriously, he was easily distracted by social media and didn’t sufficiently study. So he could break his cycle of academic failure, he decided to create new positive habits for himself. He studied in a more appropriate environment free of distractions and started taking school seriously. Quickly after this change in behavior, his results dramatically improved and he was forever grateful for the changes he had made.

  2. C根据划线词所在句的下一句Finally, the way forward opened up and I revved ahead of the others.”可推知,作者一有机会就忍不住超车follow意为跟随direct意为指导go past意为驶过,超过talk with意为……说话。故选C
