I.

1. Buddy and his cousins Billy and Lenwood.

2. They played with fireworks.

II.

1.

① eagerness

② The two scenes reveal that the characters, particularly Lenwood, are adventurous and willing to take risks. They are also not always careful or responsible when it comes to handling fireworks, as they toss them around without much thought of potential consequences. The second scene also shows the boys’ naivety and lack of experience, as they did not anticipate the explosive reaction from tossing the firecrackers into the barrel of tar.

2.

① adventurous, decisive, calm playful/fun-loving, mischievous, adventurous, daring fun-loving

3.

① dissatisfied ② tired ③ thrilled/ very excited

4.

① Buddy might get injured and be sent to see a doctor or a doctor would be called in.

② Buddy probably couldn’t see for quite a while. He might wait for his cousins and aunt to help him. As the biggest of the boys who enjoys being looked up to, he is likely to stay calm when awaiting and receiving medical treatment.

③ They might panic at first. Then they would try to offer help.

④ Buddy might cry for help, ask about his injury, then thank the doctor or comfort his cousins.

⑤ They might comfort Buddy or make an apology.

⑥ He might feel frightened that he might go blind. In the end, he probably feels relieved.

⑦ They might feel frightened and regretful.

III. Writing

One possible version:

Buddy was leaning far over the windowsill(窗台). All of a sudden, he felt something hot splatter on his face and hair. Burning pain seared (灼伤) him as he lay rolling on the bedroom floor. Darkness enveloped him. A few seconds later, Aunt Mildred and the cousins rushed in through the bedroom doorway. Buddy heard Aunt Mildred say something about calling the doctor as they rushed out of the room. Thankfully, in no time the doctor arrived and gently tended his injury while comforting him in a reassuring voice.

After what seemed like a century, Buddy spoke up softly, “Am I going to be blind, doctor?” No response. The silence scared Buddy. Then slowly the doctor spoke. “No, you’re not. There’s going to be some swelling and discomfort for a while, but the tar missed your eyes.” Buddy felt relieved. Lenwood and Billy slipped into the bedroom and stood by the bedside. Buddy squinted through his swollen eyes and squeezed a smile. “It’s OK, Lenwood. I know it was just an accident.”

Questions to ponder:

1. How do specific action verbs contribute to characterization and the plot development?

In paragraph 1, the verb phrase “lay rolling ...” vividly shows Buddy is suffering, which naturally connects the preceding paragraph to the following ones. The verb “rush” shows the cousins’ concern. In paragraph 2, the verb “slip” shows that the two boys feel guilty and uneasy.

2. How does dialogue help portray the characters and reveal the plot as well?

In paragraph 1, the indirect speech “Buddy heard Aunt Mildred say something about calling the doctor” reveals how the plot will unfold, and hints at what may occur in paragraph 2.

3. How is Buddy’s emotional transformation shown in the two paragraphs?

At first, frightened though Buddy is, he remains relatively calm before and when receiving medical treatment. Afterwards, he feels relieved for the narrow escape. In the end, he feels good enough to try to comfort his cousins.

Text 10

M: I had my first hiking experience on Jade Dragon Snow Mountain with my friend when I went to Yunnan. This was the first time I have traveled so far without my parents. I was very excited and discussed the plan with my friend almost every week leading up to the trip. Unfortunately, not everything went according to plan. When we arrived at Lijiang, the weather was not good. It was cloudy and we could barely see the mountain. My friend and I decided to book a tour to our destination.
The next morning, we started off with our guide and driver. We passed a lake on our way to the mountain. The lake was beautiful and there were lots of wild animals.

At the foot of the mountain, we could only see dark soil and blue sky. When we arrived at an altitude of about 3,800 meters, I started to feel a bit sick. This made it hard to enjoy the view. The guide gave me some advice. He said, “Focus on your steps rather than how far you have to climb.” It was not easy, but the experience was unforgettable. It was nice to see the valley from up above when we finished the hike.
In 10 days, we climbed the mountain, visited lots of ancient towns and traveled to Xishuangbanna. It is hard to say which part was the best. Experiences like this are why it’s so fun to travel.

第一节

A

  1. C。根据第一段第一句“New South Wales residents can sign up for a library card online ...”
  2. B。根据“With a library card you can”下面的“Borrow some of the library’s books and other collection material through other libraries.”
  3. D。根据倒数第二段第一句“You will need a special collection card to request and use original material and rare printed material such as maps and pictures.”

B

24. B。由第二段“He knew that one day I’d live on my own, so I’d have to look after myself.”

25. C。由第三段“But in Georgia, it was different. I felt very aware of my disability. I worried I’d have to live at home forever. I felt hopeless about the future.”

26. D。由第六段“I had an amazing coach who helped me invent moves that took advantage of my strength.”

27. A。由作者的经历和最后两段,尤其是“I focus on the immediate future. I just figure out how to do the best I can with the next few feet in front of me.”

31. D。根据文章最后一段“spend more time with each other, and less time on their smartphones or computers”可知,家庭成员之间应该多一些面对面的交流,故选D

D

32. C。文章第二段介绍了实验的第一个任务,由“The first task was getting a nut out of a puzzle box, requiring two tools: first a short, sharp tool used to cut the membrane, then a long stick to get the nut out of a hole.”

33. B。根据第三段的“Researchers also noticed that each cockatoo had a different way of carrying and using the tools.” 第二段提到“Five out of 10 cockatoos were able to reach the nut.”,所以A选项的“Most of them”不对;由第三段的首句可知凤头鹦鹉是能在行动前提前计划的,故C不对;从实验过程来看,凤头鹦鹉是能使用多种工具的,所以D不对。

34. D。由第五段的“Common signs of stress and anxiety include biting and feather picking ... but sometimes cockatoos bite others due to stress and fear. Feather picking can be a more serious sign that the cockatoo is unhappy. In extreme conditions, a cockatoo may pluck out all of its feathers.”

Dear Jim,

I am very sorry that I missed the examination on English Writing you organized last Friday. I feel terrible about it and want to explain what happened that day.

I suddenly fell sick early that morning and my parents had to take me to the hospital. The doctor examined me and said I had a bad cold. Please find enclosed (随函附上的) a copy of the medical bill. I sincerely hope you could understand my situation and accept my apology.

I would appreciate your allowing me to take a make-up examination. I will come to your office on Monday to discuss this possibility with you.

Once again, I apologize for any inconvenience caused.

Yours,

Li Hua

第二节(One possible version

The next morning, Luisa asked Mateo to check the box again. She pulled Mateo out of bed, advising him to go to the box. Mateo dragged (缓慢而费力地移动) himself from upstairs and walked to the box. Hopeless and frustrated, he unwillingly and slowly opened the door. Mateo couldn’t believe his eyes. In the box lay lots of new books while his books were gone. The happy boy jumped up and down, clapped his hands and shouted, “It worked! My little library worked!” “But how did it work?” Mateo wondered, deciding to figure out who had helped him.

Finally, his chance came when Mateo saw his next-door neighbor Julianne walking up to the box with two books. Mateo asked Julianne how she had heard about the library. It turned out that his sister Luisa had visited all the older kids in the neighborhood and asked them to tell their younger sisters and brothers about the little library. Julianne’s answer moved Mateo to tears. As Mateo looked back, his eyes were greeted with a big smile from Luisa, who stood by the front door watching him. “I’m so lucky to have new books to read and even luckier to have a great sister!”
