III. A. 1. 1) changed; 2) recognize; 3) worse; 4) neglect/ignore;
5) confess; 6) letter; 7) hatred
2. Guesses: Jane must have suffered a lot when she lived with the Reeds years ago. Mrs Reed must have mistreated her and punished her constantly, which in turn made little Jane feel so angry that she didn’t see the woman as her aunt anymore.
Clues: “... my hatred of the Reeds”;
“I had often been called there to be punished.”;
“I had sworn never to call her aunt again ...”;
“Her face ... was as stern as ever ...”;
“That child was more trouble to me than anyone would believe!”;
“I hated you so much ... That was my revenge on you, for causing me so much trouble!”;
“You were always so angry and violent, such a wicked child!”
B. 1. Jane’s cousins vs Jane Eyre:
1) didn’t care about their mother at all; 2) looked after her aunt during her last days;
Clues: 3) “I spent some time every day looking after her, and the rest of the time with my cousins, listening to their plans for the future ... It was quite clear they had no real feeling for their mother, and were almost looking forward to her death.”;
“She lay there asleep in her room, neglected by her daughters and servants.”

“I had sworn never to call her aunt again, but I did not regret breaking that promise to myself. I held her hand ... she removed her hand from mine. ‘That child was more trouble to me than anyone would believe! ...’”;
“I spent some time every day looking after her ...”;
· 6) tell Jane the truth ; 7) forgave her and still hoped to heal their relationship before she died;
Clues: “Before I die I must confess what I’ve done wrong ...” She broke off. “After all, perhaps I don’t need to tell her,”;
“I hated you so much ... That was my revenge on you ...” she cried angrily ... I said, “I don’t think about that any more ...”;
“You were always so angry and violent, such a wicked child!”;
“... I would have loved you if you’d let me. Forget it all and kiss me now, aunt.” But it was too late for her to break the habit of dislike, and she turned away from me. Poor woman!

IV. B. 1. Ignoring her words, I walked away quickly.
2. Staring at him in anger, John raised his strong right arm to knock him down.

III. WRITING
One possible version:
“Everything is going to be fine,” Luz told the soaked and shivering little girl. Minutes later, the fire engine arrived. A ladder was lowered into the hole. It was with the ladder that Luz could eventually climb up with Alyson in her arms. No sooner had they been rescued from inside the hole than emergency workers rushed Alyson to an ambulance to make sure that she was physically alright. Alyson was scared and covered in dirt but, amazingly, uninjured. The family shed tears of relief and extended their genuine gratitude to Luz. Luz uttered, “I was just trying to save her life.”
The family later learned that the ground had been destroyed by tree roots, leaving its surface vulnerable. To prevent anyone else from being swallowed again, the family had it filled with dirt and rocks. One sunny afternoon long after the incident, when Marlen took Alyson for a walk on the solid ground, the little girl hesitated at first but slowly grew more confident. At that moment, Luz came out of her kitchen and caught a warm scene — familiar laughter echoed once more as Marlen and Alyson played games on the backyard, worry-free! Totally immersed in the joyful atmosphere, Luz smiled radiantly and knew clearly what she did was truly worth it.
Questions to ponder:
How do external conflicts help shape the character and highlight the theme?
Through the description of the dangerous of the hole and the urgency of the accident in the given part, we can vividly see a brave and calm character who risked her life to save others . In paragraph 2, the family repaired the surface of the ground so that no one could get hurt again. Luz smiled happily and knew what she had done was truly worth it. These also highlight the theme.
