Clues in the text

Before Joe’s visit

I (Pip)

anxious/

worried

“If I could have kept him away by paying money, I certainly would have paid money ... his clothes, his manners ... would make me ashamed of him.”

Upon Joe’s arrival

Joe

happy but nervous/

uncomfortable

“... his good honest face shining with

happiness.”; “But Joe insisted on holding it carefully in front of him.”; “Joe’s eyes rolled around the room ...”

During the breakfast

I (Pip)

embarrassed

“Breakfast was a painful experience for me ... I was glad when Herbert left to go to work.”

Joe

uncomfortable

/awkward

“Joe looked round desperately for a place to put his hat ...”

When Joe gave me the message

I (Pip)

annoyed

→ shy/guilty

“I said crossly ...”; “I felt the blood rush to my face as I heard her name.”

Joe

“He looked at me quietly for a moment ... ‘Wouldn’t have come, you see,’ he said slowly and carefully ...”

When Joe was leaving

I (Pip)

touched/

moved and reflective

“His words ... touched me deeply. By the time I had managed to control my tears ...”

Joe

honest/sincere and kind

“Pip, I wish you even more success.”; “... I know I’m stupid ... God bless you!”; “His words, spoken simply and from the heart ...”

2. 1) Although Joe seemed awkward in the eyes of Pip, Joe is a kind-hearted and sincere person, despite his lack of education and sophistication (世故). He exhibited genuine care and concern for Pip, treating him with respect and humility (谦卑) even when Pip began to distance himself from him. Joe also showed dignity and honesty in expressing his feelings to Pip and was sensible enough to know exactly what he wanted.

2) No. Pip did lose himself in his pursuit of becoming an “educated gentleman” when he first came to London, and therefore considered Joe an embarrassment and feared Joe’s presence would have a negative impact on his reputation and social status. However, there are still clues showing his inner conflict and self-reflection later in his life when he recounted this incident:

① “I am sorry to confess that ...”;

② “I was not sensitive enough to realize that it was all my fault, and that if I hadn’t considered him common, he wouldn’t have been so clumsy.”;

③ “‘But you aren’t leaving already, Joe?’ I protested.”;

④ “His words, spoken simply and from the heart, touched me deeply.”

All of these show that Pip was truly moved by Joe’s honesty, kindness and dignity, and he remembered he had been indebted to Joe and regretted treating Joe badly.

IV. 1. ① “‘Give me your hat.’ But Joe insisted on holding it carefully in front of him.”;

② “Joe looked round desperately for a place to put his hat, and finally laid it lovingly on a shelf. ”;

③ “... standing up and picking up his hat.”

These descriptions reflect Joe’s personality in an indirect but vivid way. Though he behaved awkwardly at first, using his hat to clumsily divert his nervousness and discomfort, he seemed to be quite decisive when he was leaving, showing his unsophisticated and dignified character.
