2022-23学年第39期总第908期高一II版答案

III. A. 1. The Houys are sensitive, intelligent, sensible and gentle creatures who are in control / the important people in the country of the Houyhnhnms. They represent an ideal of rational existence / “perfection of nature”.

The Yahoos are unintelligent, dirty, unpleasant and violent creatures who are servants / inferior beings in the country of the Houyhnhnms. They represent humans in the real world.

* Gulliver represents the middle ground between the Houys and the Yahoos. Although he was a human, similar to a Yahoo, he was also disgusted with the Yahoos’ evil habits like the Houys.

2. Part 1: Paras 1-8; Gulliver and the Houy master talked about telling lies.

Part 2: Paras 9-16; They talked about wars in the human world.

Part 3: Paras 17-20; They talked about the Yahoos’ obsession with money.

How they viewed ...

Lying

War

Money

Humans/

The Yahoos

They either told lies or accused other people of lying.

They fought wars for all kinds of reasons and tried all means to destroy as many “enemies” as they could.

It’s the most sought-after thing, and they were obsessed with it.

The Houys

They couldn’t understand it.

They considered it a horrible thing.

They found it strange because they didn’t need it at all.

B. 1. proud/delighted → disgusted

2. surprised → accepting → longing

3. interested/curious → worried/concerned → sad → annoyed/shocked → confused/puzzled

* As he learned more about the Houys’ pure way of life and their virtues, he could no longer justify things like wars and lies that exist in the human world and started to question human nature and the society he came from.

C. Satire is reflected through what the Houys and the Yahoos symbolize and their contrasting views on things that exist in the human world. While the horses controlled the human-like Yahoos and were considered noble creatures in the country of the Houyhnhnms, they, on the contrary, serve humans as domesticated (驯养的) animals in the real world. More ironically, horses here, displaying the best qualities of humanity, were pure, intelligent, honest and rational, but the Yahoos showed nothing but evil, ugliness, violence and greed (贪婪).

The author’s own ideas may lie in Gulliver’s changes. The more Gulliver knew about the Houys, the more he admired their virtues and hated the Yahoos, trying to distance himself from them. He even decided to give up on humanity and live among the Houys forever. All this may reflect the author’s longing for an ideal society like the country of the Houyhnhnms.

IV. cried, announced, began, argued, complained, shouted, apologized, admitted, claimed, denied, emphasized, explained, insisted, promised, sighed, suggested, wondered, etc.

V. B. (One possible version)

But this perfect happiness did not last long.

“I’m sorry,” said my master one day. “My friends and I have decided you can’t stay here any longer. You see, you’re neither one of us, nor a Yahoo.”

“No!” I cried desperately. “Don’t send me away! How can I go back to England to live with those awful Yahoos!”

“I’m afraid you must,” he replied gently. “My servants will help you make a boat.”

And so, two months later, although I was very sad to leave, I said goodbye to my dear master and his family, and rowed away from the land of the Houys. I knew that I would never find happiness anywhere else.
