III. A. 1. reached; 2. bazaar; 3. reminded; 4. vanity; 5. late; 6. stall; bceafd
B. 1. absent-minded and impatient/eager; the first paragraph
2. unhappy and worried/fearful; “I left the house in a bad mood ... already I feared what might happen.”
3. anxious/annoyed; “I sat staring at the clock for some time. When its noise began to annoy me ...”
4. anxious/upset; “After an unbearable delay, it moved slowly ... and crept along.”
5. shy/timid and empty; “I walked shyly into the center of the bazaar.”; “Remembering with difficulty why I had come ...”
6. nervous; “I looked nervously at the great vases ...”
7. painful and angry / frustrated; “... my eyes burned with pain and anger”
IV. A. 1. the boy’s fantasies of love, romance, beauty and mystery / the boy’s longing and search for ideal romance and beauty
2. the boy failed in his search for ideal romance and beauty / the boy’s love for the girl was unrealistic and would remain a wishful idea / the boy’s expectations were driven by nothing but his own vanity
B. “I left the house in a bad mood and walked slowly towards the school. The air was pitilessly cold and already I feared what might happen.” (in the second paragraph)
The boy’s “bad mood”, the “pitilessly cold air” and his “fear” all hint that his trip to Araby would inevitably end up being a disappointment.
V. Para 1 hyperbole (夸张); personification (拟人); the last paragraph:metaphor and personification
Sentences ①②③⑤: sight, sound and touch
Sentences ④: personification; The “Eastern guards” and the “dark entrance” create a solemn (庄严的) atmosphere and even seem a bit daunting to the boy, which can explain why he looked “nervously” at the vases. They also imply that the young lady didn’t take the boy seriously, as is shown in the previous sentence.
VI. A. Probably because he felt the young lady didn’t take him seriously and he was so disappointed to realize there was a huge gap between his fantasies and the reality. He is described as introverted (内向的), sensitive and shy.
B. Although the boy was so eager to go to Araby and fulfill his promise to the girl he loved, his journey to Araby was filled with obstacles that tortured him as he waited. The ticking clock, his uncle’s late return and indifferent attitude, the delayed and slow-moving train ... everything seemed to delay his progress. When he finally arrived at the bazaar, the emptiness, the silence and the young lady’s attitude further deepened his disappointment. Finally, as he faced darkness, all his fantasies were shattered (破灭), turning his youthful love into a tragic defeat and leaving a void in him that might never be filled.
C. The boy’s failure to fulfill his desire and his inability to overcome the obstacles may reflect all Dubliners’ state of life, where there’s no room for things like hope and love to exist. It is a state of inaction and numbness that everyone in Dublin may recognize but cannot change.
