1. What is the significance of Dragon Boat Festival in Chinese culture?

The Dragon Boat Festival is one of the most important traditional festivals in China and has a history of over 2000 years. It is celebrated to commemorate the death of Qu Yuan, a famous Chinese poet. The patriotic poet threw himself into the Miluo River in Hunan province after the kingdom he lived in was taken over by enemies.

 

2. How does your family celebrate Dragon Boat Festival?

We celebrate the day by eating lots of zongzi! We might also hang wormwood on doors.

 

3. Have you ever watched or participated in a dragon boat race? What was it like?

I once saw a dragon boat race when I was in Nanjing. It was so exciting to watch the teams race against each other in their dragon-shaped boats. I liked hearing the drummers drumming at the front of the boats. Their job is to lead the whole team.

 

4. How important do you think it is to preserve and promote traditional festivals like this?

Preserving traditional festivals like Dragon Boat Festival helps us stay rooted in our culture and give us a deeper sense of identity. Even if you celebrate the Festival by eating just one zongzi, or simply wishing a happy festival to a friend or family member, it is meaningful.

During Dragon Boat Festival, there is a routine in Li Hua’s family. They always first go down to the waterfront to watch the dragon boat race. Li Hua cheers loudly to encourage the racers. Then, it’s time to go to the supermarket and buy some ingredients to make zongzi. With her grandma, Li Hua puts the filling into the casing of the zongzi. In the evening, the whole family gets together to eat the freshly-made zongzi and watch some fun shows on TV to celebrate. What a fun day!
