M: Mary, I’m not sure whether I should take the new job or not?
W: What do you have to lose by trying?
Text 2
M: It’s already 8:30 pm. Why haven’t you gotten off work yet?
W: I have to wait for a student. She’s had some problems with a classmate.
Text 3
M: Christina. I want to send you some photos of our last visit. I’m not sure of your email address. Could you tell me?
W: Thanks, Thomas! My email is ChristinaZhang@165.com.
Text 4
W: Good morning. What seems to be the problem?
M: I have a high fever and a headache.
W: How long have you had these symptoms?
M: Well, I think I caught a cold while out in the rain yesterday afternoon, and I started to feel uncomfortable in the evening.
Text 5
W: We are going to eat at the Italian restaurant in the shopping mall after the meeting. Do you want to join us?
M: I am not sure. I went there one month ago, and the service was unbelievably bad.
W: Well, I heard they got a new manager last week. So, maybe it’s better now.
Text 6
M: Cathy, did you hear about the big news about ChatGPT?
W: No, what is it?
M: A bunch of American schools are banning the new artificial intelligence tool.
W: Why?! It’s free and convenient.
M: Lots of students are using it to do their homework, which should be done by themselves.
W: Oh! I see. It has indeed raised tough questions about the future use of AI in education.
Text 7
M: Hi, Hannah. Are you taking a ballet class?
W: Yes. I signed up for one several weeks ago. One of my best friends recommended it to me. She is a big fan of that ballet teacher.
M: Sounds great! Where do you take classes?
W: In Moscow Mansion. It is quite close to our company so it’s really convenient.
M: How often is the class?
W: Twice a week. Do you want to try it? The first class is free.
M: Why not? It is always exciting to try new things.
Text 8
M: This morning, a powerful 7.8 earthquake struck large areas of southern Turkey and northern Syria.
W: I am sorry to hear that.
M: At least 200 people were killed. The number of dead and injured will likely increase.
W: That is heartbreaking. By the way, have you ever been in a natural disaster?
M: Well, I didn’t experience the Wenchuan Earthquake even though I am from Sichuan, but I went through a big flood in 1998. I was in Heilongjiang at the time. The water level was so high that people’s lands and houses were almost destroyed.
W: I am glad that nothing happened to you. I still remember a terrible ice storm when I was seven in Jilin.
M: Thank goodness that we managed to stay safe.
Text 9
M: You raised three successful children. Can you tell me what you did when you were raising them that made them the way that they are today?
W: Well, I think it’s similar to the way my parents raised me. You know, they were working all the time. I only saw them at 6:00 pm for dinner, and they just made us independent. I started helping them with housework when I was young. And in the same way, my children were helping me. And they were aware that they needed to be well-behaved and do their homework.
M: And you also let them follow their own dreams?
W: Yes, they all went in different directions. Gorge wanted to study business, Elon wanted to study law, and Tosca wanted to study literature. I encouraged them to pursue their dreams.
M: Looking back on the way you raised your children, what is the best gift you think you gave them?
W: Being polite and kind to others and doing good for others. I think they saw that. And they all do good things for others.
Text 10
W: Hi, I am Amanda. I am a garden designer. I live in London with my husband, who is a Chinese musician, Guo Yi. We’ve been married for 34 years. My favorite thing about China is the warmth of its people. I’ve always found that everyone is kind and welcoming. To me, the most curious thing about Chinese culture is the food. In Chinese culture, food is extremely important, and there is always a lot of discussion about it. So, when you go to a restaurant, it really takes a long time to order. If you go to someone’s house, they will tell you the way they cook. I hope I’ve increased my understanding of Chinese culture through my marriage with Guo Yi and interactions with lots of Chinese people. Also, we have our son, Tou Tou, who bridges China and England in an amazing way. The more people can meet each other and get to know each other, the richer both English and Chinese cultures become. And I really hope that there will be more and more English people who visit China and vice versa.
