IV.

Scene 1: hold the clothes steady; drag a shirt off the line; pull off the clothespins ...

Scene 2: fetch the dishes and lay them out; cook steak and vegetables; cut up our food ...

V. One possible version

It was nearly impossible to take down the laundry with just one hand. I reached out to drag a shirt off the line when the line bounced and all the clothes fell off. We then started to blame each other for it. “Stop arguing and help each other,” Mom growled (低声吼叫). So we decided to do it together. Pippa held the clothes steady while I pulled off the clothespins, and finally, we managed it. Preparing the dinner was no easy task, either. We even smashed a plate when quarreling over who would fetch the dishes and who would lay them out.

Facing the mess, we were too exhausted to keep arguing. We swept away the fragments (碎片) and tried to cooperate. We cooked steak and vegetables, and then I got a knife, Pippa got a fork, and we helped each other cut up our food without discussion. “Finally!” Mom said. Pippa and I have been a great team ever since. We still had our moments of arguing, but they were fewer and farther between. We even started to enjoy each other’s company more. Many hands do make light work. And many hands make for a more enjoyable and fulfilling experience, too.

Questions to ponder:

How can the continued part of the story echo the foreshadowing in the given part?

In the given part, arguing was second nature to the siblings, and they were too competitive. That day on the rink, they competed with each other as usual and ended up injuring themselves and their mother. This marked the starting point in their learning that “Many hands make light work.” In the continued part, they may argue and make a mess when tackling the laundry and dinner before they finally understand the importance of cooperation. When describing how they argued and made a mess when trying to do the housework together, we should consider the important fact that the writer had a cracked elbow and his/her sister had a sprained wrist, which would definitely add to the difficulty of the tasks.

How is the theme highlighted?

The theme of the story could be the importance of cooperation. We can highlight it in two ways. In the first paragraph of the continued part  when the two sisters haven’t realized the importance of joint efforts  we can emphasize the difficulty of the tasks, the arguments they had and the mess they made. In the second paragraph, we could describe the joy and satisfaction they felt when they joined hands to finish the tasks smoothly.
