1. Michael (the narrator) and his dad.
2. They tried to clear out Michael’s Grandpa’s house.
II.
1. Michael’s.
2. (1) realistic; (2) unrealistic; (3) unrealistic; (4) wearily; (5) spraying; (6) big; (7) playful; (8) different; (9) frown ; (10) carefree; (11) bookish; (12) playful; (13) carefree; (14) weary; (15) serious
3. Michael was confused about what had changed his dad from a playful and carefree boy into a weary and serious man. He wished that there were a time capsule or a memory box that held more of his dad’s boyhood stuff.
III.
1. The letter might include some “unrealistic” ideas from Michael’s dad as a boy.
2. His dad might be amazed by what he himself had written in the letter as a young boy and he would begin to recall his boyhood memories and even desire to do something “unrealistic” together with Michael.
IV. (One possible version)
It turned out to be a letter addressed to future people from my dad as a kid. Dad told the future people that they had no flying cars nor household robots, so they had to do everything themselves. I grinned as I scanned through the funny letter. My jaw almost dropped when he said he dreamed of a vacation on Mars. That was not realistic at all, boy! I laughed to myself, eyes still fixed on the letter. “I made you a time capsule. Tell your robot to dig under the apple tree in the yard.” He told the future people at the end of the letter.
Amazed by the letter, I raced to Dad in the house. The poor man was still occupied with sorting out Grandpa’s papers. I dropped the letter on the table and joked, “Why don’t you just have your robot go through the papers? And how could people vacation on Mars? That was unrealistic. I mean ...” I was laughing so hard that I could barely talk. Dad looked utterly bewildered (困惑不解的). Then he read the letter, shook his head in disbelief and finally burst out laughing. “Come on, let’s dig out the time capsule under the tree.” He strode (大步走) out to the yard. Suddenly I saw it! The boy with the water pipe.
Questions to ponder:
* How does the continued part of the story echo the foreshadowing in the given part?
In the given part, Michael’s dad thought Michael to be an unrealistic boy and Michael thought his dad to be a weary and serious adult. Michael was amazed to find an old photograph, in which his dad as a kid seemed to be playful and carefree. Then Michael began to be curious about his dad and wished there were a time capsule to show more about his dad’s boyhood. Therefore, the letter written by Michael’s dad as a kid should unveil more unrealistic and childish parts of him. And maybe the letter would even direct them to a time capsule made by Michael’s dad, which would show more about his boyhood, just as Michael had wished.
* How is the theme highlighted?
The theme of the story could be how the long-lost innocence of boyhood helped relieve a man’s stresses in life and deepened the bond between Dad and son. This is highlighted by the son’s accidental discovery of an old photograph, an imaginative letter and possibly, a long-buried time capsule of his dad’s. By looking back at the dad’s boyhood, the dad and the son deepened their mutual understanding.
