Text 1
W: Bad news! Our train has been delayed for half an hour.
M: Don’t worry! It only takes us two hours to reach the destination.
Text 2
W: It’s raining so hard outside! You’d better take an umbrella with you tomorrow.
M: So cold as well. Maybe it will snow, oh wait, the weather report says it will be fine tomorrow. Brilliant!
Text 3
W: Hey, Andrew! I heard you went to Iceland last month. How’s it going?
M: Fantastic! I mean, the fish there is delicious and the landscapes are breathtaking, but it was always difficult to keep myself warm and dry.
Text 4
W: Hi, Jason! Don't forget our plan to see the table tennis match next Monday. Have you booked the tickets?
M: Not yet, but I'm sure there are still plenty of tickets left.
W: But it’s the final match. Everyone is fighting for a ticket. You’d better be quick and buy some.
Text 5
W: Dr Clarkson, can I still hand in my research paper? Sorry for handing it in late.
M: Sure, Janet. But I have to take 25 percent off your mark. You know, the deadline was last Friday. Why did you take so long?
W: I lost my student card and couldn’t access the library.
Text 6
W: Have you seen our new teacher? She delivered a lecture on human geography in the lecture hall this morning.
M: Oh, I thought it was tomorrow! Too bad to miss a lecture that I am interested in! Anyway, do you know the reason why Professor Mason quit?
W: Not a clue. After all, he lives within the walking distance of the campus.
M: You are right. I heard it’s the salary. But she is such a helpful person, and everybody loves her.
Text 7
M: Good afternoon! How can I help you?
W: Well, I’d like to book a small meeting room for a group discussion, but I’m having a hard time finding the registration form anywhere.
M: We’ve recently replaced the paper-based forms with electronic ones. You know, it’s not worth coming here just to fill out a form.
W: That makes sense. Also, people can’t be bothered to come to the library to tell us if they need to cancel their booking.
M: True! Now you can book a room online at least three days in advance, and cancel online at least one day before the scheduled time, or two days before for the big meeting rooms. Anyway, we don’t have many meeting rooms for big groups.
W: I understand. Where can I find the electronic registration?
M: On our official website. Here, let me show you.
W: Thank you! Is there a computer I can use here to complete the form? Just in case I need your help.
M: Sure, and I’ll be here to help until eight.
Text 8
W: Hi, Steve! What sports event will you take part in tomorrow?
M: Hey, Michelle! I am going to join the 100- and 200-meter swimming events.
W: Oh, not the relay race? Why? I remember you and your classmates won second place in that last year.
M: I took Ryan’s place in the relay team last year because he had a bad cold then. I am a good swimmer. I’ll try my best to win the championship this time. You won’t be disappointed.
W: Wow! I can’t wait to see you swim. By the way, do you have any suggestions for learners? You know, beginners like me often have a hard time with swimming. It can be quite scary.
M: The main thing is to just relax, spread out your arms and keep your head above the water. That’s what my teacher told me when I was learning to swim in primary school.
Text 9
W: Excuse me, is it possible to enter the concert hall now?
M: Sorry, but it’s still two hours before the concert starts, and we won't be ready to welcome people for at least another half hour.
W: I see. The thing is my friend is in a wheelchair. I would like to have her all settled before the crowds arrive.
M: I understand. But there’s no need to worry. We offer assistance for audience members like your friend. She could enter through the special passage next to Gate 2.
W: Great! Will there be anyone to help my friend with the wheelchair? Actually, I am not a big fan, so I didn’t get myself a ticket. But my friend stayed up very late for days to finally get the ticket. Still, I am a little worried about her. I mean, though I can afford a ticket, there are no extra ones available for me.
M: You can ask for help at the service counter to see if there are any left. My colleague could accompany your friend to her seat and assist with her wheelchair.
W: Thanks a million!
Text 10
M: Welcome to our lecture today on biology, focusing specifically on animal behavior. An interesting aspect of animal behavior is the difference observed when animals are kept in zoos as opposed to their natural habitats. In zoos, animals face fewer direct survival challenges, such as the need to hunt for food or hide from other animals that might want to hurt them. This gives them more time to do other things. For example, monkeys in zoos often spend more time resting and playing since they always have enough food provided by the zookeepers. Also, even though zoos try to make the living areas look like the wild, it’s still different. So, animals start doing new things they wouldn’t do in the wild. For instance, in the wild, female monkeys have a lot of space and don’t need to be very close to others. But in zoos, because they live closer to each other, they become more friendly and clean each other’s fur.
