M: You can see pandas in various zoos worldwide. But do you know China owns all these cute animals?
W: Wow, really?
M: Yes. It's through an exchange program to share culture and kindness with the world as everyone loves pandas! This fact was explained in one of my school lessons.
W: That’s so cool. I’ve watched a movie about pandas - Kung Fu Panda. The monkey in that movie was great, but because of the movie, pandas quickly became my favorite animal!

W: I just read the results from an online survey. There’s been a growing trend in the UK for young people to live with their parents.
M: Maybe they can’t stand the loneliness of living on their own.
W: Well, the survey shows that it's because some young people have lost their jobs and they can’t afford their rent while others just want to enjoy the comfort of home.
M: I guess it must be a big burden for the parents.
W: Absolutely. The survey found that household spending has gone up sharply, and that parents are sacrificing holidays to look after their “big kids”.
M: I hope it won’t happen to us. We should help our son to be more independent from now on.

M: Have you been following the news about the environment recently, Sarah?
W: Yes, I have. It’s really worrying to see all the damage that’s being done to the planet.
M: I can’t agree more.
W: I’ve heard you are doing a project on environmental protection. Is there anything we can do to help?
M: Well, there are a lot of small changes we can make in our daily lives. For example, using reusable bags, and reducing our energy usage.
W: Right. What about bigger changes to address global pollution?
M: Firstly, companies should not be allowed to dump waste water into the sea. Secondly, governments need to increase support for new energy development programs and carry out policies that encourage the use of clean energy.
W: Indeed. It’s important for everyone to be aware that their actions have an influence on the environment. And everyone should take steps to reduce their carbon footprint.
M: Totally.
W: We only have one planet. It’s up to all of us to take care of it for future generations.

M: Psychologists tell us that there are four basic stages that human beings pass through when they enter a new culture. This process, which helps us to deal with culture shock, is the way our brain reacts to the strange new things we meet when we move from one culture to another. Culture shock begins with the “honeymoon” stage. This is the period of time when we first arrive in which everything about the new culture is strange. We may be thrilled to be in the new environment, hearing new sounds and eating new food. Unfortunately, the second stage can be difficult. After we have settled down into our new life, we can become very tired and begin to miss our homeland. This “rejection” stage can be quite dangerous because we may develop unhealthy habits. The third stage of culture shock is called the “adjustment” stage. This is when we begin to realize that things are not so bad in the host culture. Our sense of humor usually becomes stronger and we become stronger by learning to take care of ourselves in our new environment. The fourth stage can be called “at ease at last”. And there is a fifth stage of culture shock which many people don’t know about. It is called “reverse culture shock”. I will talk about these two stages in detail in the next class.
