M: Hi Kate, your roommate mentioned I could find you in the TV lounge. What are you up to?

W: Can't you tell?

M: Well, it looks like you’re watching TV, but we have a math mid-term tomorrow. I thought you’d be studying for it. I was thinking maybe we could study together.

W: I understand, but I needed a break. This math stuff gives me a headache if I work on it too long.

M: I get it. I've been at it for three hours. Some of the sample problems are driving me crazy. I just don’t get some of them. I thought maybe two heads are better than one.

W: That's a good point. But you know, I wish I knew that person from our class who got 100 on the last test. She didn’t miss a question.

M: I think it was Elizabeth.

W: Oh! She is a friend of mine. She might be able to help us. Why don’t I give her a call?

M: At this hour? It’s already 10:30.

W: Yeah, you are right. But I helped her out with something once before, so she may feel it's only right to help me now. Let’s give her a call and see what she says. Maybe going over some of the problems with us would help her review the materials, too.

听第10段材料,回答第1720题。

Text 10

M: By the end of the term, I hope you’ll come to share my belief that formal writing always requires revision. Some students may have the mistaken idea that revision means simply making corrections in spelling and grammar. I call that “proofreading”.

What I expect you to do is to revise, evaluate and improve the overall effectiveness of your paper. But how can you tell if your paper is effective? Well, for example, start by asking yourself these questions: Is the topic narrow enough to be fully discussed within the given length? Is the main idea clear? Are they supported by specific details and examples? Does the paper move smoothly from one idea to the next?

You’ll need enough time to make big changes, meaning you might have to make many adjustments before your paper becomes very clear to the reader. So, I expect you to submit the first draft of each paper two weeks before the final due date. This timeline allows me to provide feedback and return it to you in time for revisions. Then you can submit a final draft for grading.

This process may seem like a great deal of trouble at first, but I think you will find it valuable. In fact, after completing this course, I doubt you’ll ever submit a term paper without careful revision.
