II. 1. Storvassdal 2. summer 3. mountain farm 4. fish 5. American
6. making do with 7. flute 8. my own hands 9. lake
Answers to 10-12 may vary.
E.g. 10. potato fields and hay in bundles in the distance / water glittering beside the boat / fish jumping out of the sun-kissed water
11. water lapping gently at the hull / the merry warble of birds
12. the cool water in the summer heat / the crisp air and a slight breeze
13. America 14. self-reliance/ doing things for yourself
III. 1. The author had gone back to America without the boat.
2. The boat was more than just a physical object. It was a symbol of the times the author spent with his grandfather and the self-reliance he learned from him.
3. He might feel delighted upon setting eyes on the boat again, but at the same time, sorrowful, for Grandfather could have passed away in that 30-year period.
4. Memories of one’s grandfather or a grandfather’s lesson of self-reliance.
One possible version:
Para 1: Finally, I finished the hull and managed to make a sail. Then with my little boat, I headed for Storvassdal, where I daydreamed on board while a slight breeze carried me to an opposite shore. With the air crisp and clean, there was no sound but the warble of birds. I had been a regular visitor ever since. Before long, however, I had to return to America. Despite my plead, I could not bring my boat home. With a saddened heart, I went to the lake for the last time, placed my craft in a hollow place beneath a boulder and resolved to return one day to recover my treasure.
Para 2: Thirty years later, I went back to Norway in the summer, looking for my boat. My search seemed hopeless. I was about to give up when I saw a large boulder. I slowly removed it, reached into the hollow space and felt something below. I pulled the boat out and held it in my hands. For years, it had been resting there, waiting for my return. Seeing the rough wood hull hardly touched by age, I knew I would never forget this moment. As I touched the boat, I felt my grandfather’s presence. Working tirelessly on that isolated farm and guiding me to make the boat, he taught me the importance of self-reliance.
Questions to ponder:
1. How does the continued story show the foreshadowing in the given part?
In the given part, the author mentions the difference between life in America and in an isolated farm in Norway. Rather than buying everything he needed, Grandfather made whatever he could with his own hands. He even taught the author to make a boat to sail in the nearby lake. The boat was not only a symbol of the times the author spent with his grandfather but also one of self-reliance. In paragraph one, the author most likely would have gone to the lake to sail the boat and then returned to America without it. In paragraph two, the moment the boat was found, the author might have a bittersweet feeling, for, thirty years later, his grandfather could have passed away. But through his return to Norway in the company of the boat, he could reflect and feel deeply his love for his grandfather and everything he taught him in life.
2. How is the theme highlighted?
At the very beginning of the passage, the author mentions that the summer months he spent in Norway at age 10 were the most memorable of his life and that the memories of the time spent with his grandfather there remain vivid in his mind. Then the author says Grandfather, busy as he was, always found time for the two of them, including making a flute to bring music and joy and guiding the author to make a boat with his own hands. As a result, the two themes - the man’s memory of Grandfather and Grandfather’s lesson of self-reliance are interwoven as the story unfolds.

第四部分 写作
第一节(One possible version)
Dear Miss Ellis,
I’m glad to hear that our school will start an English newspaper. Now, let me suggest a column as requested.
We could call the column “News From Me”, in which we students report recent events or happenings taking place around us. I think the column is a great way for us to get some real-life journalism experience. What’s more, it will help the students to feel more connected with the newspaper because they are helping to make it. This way, it becomes a newspaper not only for the students but also by the students.
I hope my suggestion will be taken into consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节(One possible version)
“Can you tell me why you want this book?” I asked. “I like adventure stories and I like dogs,” he answered. I was delighted with his answer, and at once, I started to read to him. The story was so attractive to Max. He listened with great interest, totally lost in what was described in the story. He thanked me when I finished reading to him, looking so happy for having got the chance to listen to the story.
Then came the after-reading activities in which we interacted with each other. “I wish I were the dog. Then I could go on an adventure,” said Max as we were talking about the story. I laughed and encouraged him to come up with some different endings of the story, which all sounded pretty funny. At the end, we acted out the story together. You can imagine how happy he was. A book opens a door to a whole new world. That day, I helped Max open one, and I’m convinced that he will be able to open many more for himself in the future.
