2. She might feel determined and motivated at first, following her coach’s advice. She kept a steady pace with the other swimmers, but as the race continued, she grew tired. Her arms and legs felt heavier, and breathing became harder. Eventually, exhaustion took over, leading to her breaking point.
3. She probably managed to finish the race although she didn’t win it because breaststroke was not her best swimming stroke and her coach chose her to compete with the aim of pushing her outside her comfort zone. She felt content with herself and had a new understanding of what it really means to take part in a race.
4. Answers may vary. Eg.: overcoming self-doubt, pushing oneself out of their comfort zone, finding confidence in one’s abilities, focusing on personal progress etc.
IV. (one possible version)
On Wednesday, I arrived at the pool. Feeling sick, I looked out over the other swimmers, who seemed so strong and confident. The knots in my stomach twisted like a bag of ropes. From the bleachers came Mom’s voice, “You can do it, Jamie! Just swim your race.” I hunched (弓着背) in line with the rest of the swimmers, waiting. My body tensed up like a spring. The buzzer sounded. I sprung forward, diving into the water and kicking like a dolphin. I flipped and pushed forward. The wall appeared before I knew it. I flipped again.
But with just 25 meters to go, I hit breaking point. My arms protested, my lungs burned, and my legs were pillars of lead. The other swimmers gained distance ahead of me. I was about to quit when Coach’s previous advice came to me, “Just count your strokes. Pull. Breathe. Kick.” I gritted my teeth (咬紧牙关), counting my strokes until the wall came into sight. I slapped it with the little strength I had left. I finished last. I collapsed (瘫倒) on the ground, gasping for breath. Mom ran toward me, yelling, “You did it!” I bit my lip, saying “Yeah. I swam my race. And I think I won it.”
Questions to ponder:
1. How does the continued part of the story show the mood of the character?
In the given part, the author was nervous and hesitant before the race due to her lack of confidence and limited skills in breaststroke. The strong performances of her competitors further increased her anxiety. However, her mom and coach explained to her the true meaning of competition and encouraged her to step out of her comfort zone. Therefore, at the start of the continuation, she might have felt unconfident. But as the story progresses, she was likely to find the courage and strength to keep going even after reaching her breaking point. The description of the setting, her thoughts, reactions, speech, and the outcome of the race can show the changing mood of the character.
2. How is the theme highlighted?
When everything seemed done for and she was about to give up, she recalled her mom’s and coach’s words of encouragement, which helped her regain strength and get back the rhythm of her strokes. With only the thought of conquering herself in her mind, she managed to finish the race. This experience contributed to the theme of the story — her personal growth, making her realize that it’s her choice whether she sinks or swims.
