Characters

Personality traits

Evidence in your own words

Laura

Caring, sensitive,

compassionate, empathetic, idealistic, naive

Laura is deeply affected by the man’s death and wants to stop the garden party to show respect. She believes it would be wrong to continue celebrating following the death of someone nearby, thinking about how the man’s family would feel. She cares deeply and is idealistic, but she doesn’t realize that social barriers make it hard to cancel the party, showing her naivety (天真).

Jose

unsympathetic, practical,  class-conscious

Jose rejects Laura's suggestion to cancel the party, calling it unreasonable and silly. She focuses on practical matters like preparation and social norms. Although she says she's sorry, her hard look and dismissive (轻蔑的) tone show a lack of true sympathy. This also highlights her awareness of social class differences.

IV. 1. “A wide road” between the Sheridans’ house and the cottages symbolizes the social and moral divide between the two worlds. It represents the barrier that separates the privileged (特权阶层) from the poor, as well as the indifference of the upper class to the struggles of the lower class.

2. The detailed descriptions of the cottages highlight the poverty and struggles of the poor, evoking pity and empathy in the reader. They also create a sad and grim (凄凉) mood, contrasting with the lively and festive atmosphere of the garden party.

V. The question is complex. On one hand, canceling the party could be seen as a gesture of respect. The death of a man, leaving behind a wife and five children, is a tragic event. Having a lively party with music while the family mourns (哀悼) nearby seems insensitive. It shows empathy toward the suffering of others. On the other hand, Jose’s perspective is somewhat understandable. Canceling a well-planned party at the last minute could cause disappointment among the guests and waste a lot of preparation.

If I were Laura, I would first try to have a more in-depth conversation with my family. I would explain that while canceling the party completely might be too much, we could modify it to show respect. For example, we could tone down the music, skip the more exciting forms of entertainment, and perhaps send a basket of food or flowers to the family of the deceased (死者) as a sign of our condolences (吊唁). This way, we can balance respect for the deceased with the social expectations of the event.
