① Touch

“I learnt to work with ropes that were wet and stiff, and to tell the depth of water by using the lead line.”

Role: It helps the reader to better imagine the difficult and challenging conditions the narrator had to deal with while learning to sail.

② Sound and sight

“On the second day, I heard the sound of ducks and, looking up, I saw about twenty of them, flying in a V-shape across our path.”

Role: The mention of the sound of ducks creates an auditory image that adds to the atmosphere of the scene. The visual description of the ducks flying in a V-shape makes the scene more vivid and picturesque. It also serves as a trigger for the subsequent conversation between the narrator and Davies about shooting the ducks, which drives the plot forward.

2. At dawn on the mountaintop, the sun painted the sky in orange and pink, lighting up the landscape.

one possible answer

Dear Tom,

Im glad to hear your family is considering letting your grandparents move in. In my view, multigenerational living can be very meaningful. It not only saves money but also brings family members closer. Grandparents can share their wisdom and experiences, while younger people can give them support and care. Such daily interaction is something that phone calls cant replace.

Of course, conflicts may appear. To avoid them, I suggest setting some clear rules together - for example, respecting each others privacy and discussing household chores fairly. You can also create regular family time, such as shared meals, to strengthen bonds. With open communication and patience, living together can become a warm and rewarding experience.

Best wishes,

Li Hua

2. B。根据Zhu在回答Guo的问题时提到的“The atmosphere there is quite ‘clean’ and less affected by human activities, making the monitoring data extremely valuable ...”可知,南极洲被认为是监测温室气体的理想地点是因为它远离人类活动。

3. C。根据Zhu提到的“The freezing temperatures, strong winds and heavy snow can freeze or bury instruments.”可知,Zhu在南极洲收集气象数据时面临的一个重大挑战是极端的寒冷和大雪。

4. A。根据Zhu提到的“I try to maintain a routine in my personal life. Moreover, we organize activities to keep spirits high, such as group movie nights, sports events and barbecues ...”可知,Zhu通过坚持日常生活规律和参加集体活动来保持心理健康。

4. D。前一句提到“Phones quickly offer simple distractions, which cuts our boredom short and stop us from thinking about important questions like ‘Why am I feeling this?’ or ‘What do I lack?’”,接下来应该是对这种现象的反思。选项D“If we take a moment to think, we might make better choices”符合题意,因为它建议人们在感到无聊时应该反思,而不是立刻寻求分心。
