Dear Peter,
I’m glad you’re interested in Chinese intangible cultural heritage. Please allow me to introduce Taohuawu Woodblock New Year Prints to you.
Named a national heritage in 2006, these prints are a kind of nianhua, famous for their bright colors, clear patterns and rich themes – from traditional door gods to scenes from popular video games. Sun Yibo, one of the craft’s inheritors, has worked on Taohuawu prints for over 20 years. He and other inheritors are trying to pass down the craft by holding exhibitions and offering courses.
I think such efforts will help keep the craft alive. It’s not just art, but a part of our culture.
Feel free to let me know if you’d like to learn more. I’d be happy to share!
Yours,
Li Hua

1. A。 因此选 A。
3. C。前文用 “but” 转折,说明实际感受与 “悲伤” 相反;后文补充 “the dog hops along, looking just as happy as any other dog”,这种 “残疾却乐观” 的状态会给人积极影响。
6. A。文章开头明确 “when I drive through my neighborhood”,可知 “我” 的状态是 “驾车移动”。
12. A。 因此选 A。
I.
Who: Iman and Baeilah
What: Iman was seen as an outsider due to her poor Malay but good English. She wanted to join her classmates in floating paper boats but failed to make one and was laughed at. Baeilah watched her quietly.
When: On a rainy morning and another rainy afternoon
Where: In the schoolyard full of puddles and inside the classroom
II.
A. 1. They symbolize belonging (归属) and joy in the group. Those who can make floating boats are part of the social circle. Iman’s inability to make one strengthens her status as an outsider. Therefore, they also symbolize the barrier (障碍) she faces in connecting with her peers.
2. The sinking boat mirrors Iman’s frustration (沮丧) and sense of exclusion (排除在外). It represents her failed efforts to fit in and the teasing (嘲弄) she experiences due to cultural and linguistic differences.
B. The theme of the story is that friendship and mutual understanding can bridge cultural and social barriers, creating a sense of belonging and shared joy.
III.
1. Baeilah might sit down beside Iman, comfort her and offer to teach her how to make a paper boat. Iman might feel surprised at Baeilah’s words and actions at first, but later feel happy to follow Baeilah’s instructions.
2. Yes. Because Baeilah, the skilled “Boat Princess”, guided Iman in making it correctly. The boat was very likely to be well-made through their joint effort. The floating boat symbolizes success, hope and the birth of their friendship.
3. They might be curious and drawn in by Baeilah and Iman’s floating boat and joy. They might even join them by adding their own colorful paper boats. Their response changes from exclusion to inclusion.
IV
Just then, Baeilah went up to her and said softly, “Hey, don’t cry.” She sat down beside Iman. “Do you want me to teach you?” Baeilah asked. Iman stopped crying and looked at Baeilah in surprise. “I’ve been watching you. You’re so good at English and I wanted to learn from you.” Hearing this, Iman said, “I’m willing to help you.” Baeilah smiled, picked up a piece of paper and began to fold. Iman followed her, copying each move carefully. When the last fold was done, a small paper boat rested in Iman’s hands. At Baeilah’s suggestion, they walked together toward the schoolyard.
They found a puddle and put the boat they made in the water. The small boat floated bravely, carrying Iman’s earlier tears with newfound hope. “Yeah, we made it!” Baeilah and Iman exclaimed (呼喊). Attracted by their joyful cries, curious children gathered around. Soon, more paper boats joined theirs – white, yellow, blue – turning the puddle into a rainbow. Iman turned to Baeilah. With a heart overflowing with warmth, Iman said,“Thank you for the wonderful pairwork again.” Baeilah laughed. Iman laughed too. Their bright smiles reflected in the puddles. From that moment on, friendship had found its safe harbor.
Questions to ponder:
1. Why does the paper boat float successfully?
Friendship gives it strength. Baeilah’s guidance corrected Iman’s folding errors, symbolizing how kindness and support turn failure into hope.
2. What does the “rainbow” of boats show?
It shows that kindness can spread. The other children adding colorful boats symbolizes how Baeilah’s act of inclusion inspired acceptance throughout the whole class.

W: No, I didn’t.
M: Why? Did you have a class?
W: No, I was busy with my paper. It was an exciting game, wasn’t it? Who won?
M: Our college’s basketball team. Actually, both teams were very strong, and the score was close. By the end of the match, the No 6 player made a beautiful shot, and it proved to be the winning basket.
W: That’s great!
M: Yes, everyone shouted and cheered excitedly.
Text 7
M: Good morning, Ms Smith. I know you have made your decision on the team’s players. But I’m just wondering why I wasn’t chosen.
W: Oh, Bob. I’m sorry about this. Thirty-five players wanted to join the volleyball team, but only 15 could make the list.

W: It should. We did it last year, remember?
M: Right. How about the lights? Maybe we should move them before anything else, so they don’t break.
W: Good thinking. Then we should move the bedside tables since they are small.
M: OK. You take one and I’ll take the other.
W: You know, I think maybe it’s time to paint these walls. They look pretty dirty.
M: Yes, the whole room could do with a fresh coat of paint. Do you think we should go to the paint store after we’re finished?
W: OK. Then we can have dinner together at the restaurant nearby.
Text 9
M: Susan, what was your first job?
W: Well, I worked in an expensive cake shop. It was my last year at school, before I went to college. I just wanted to earn extra money for myself because I came from a family of seven and my parents couldn’t afford to give us much pocket money.
M: Was the shop a nice place to work?
W: Yes, of course, because every morning I could enjoy the wonderful smell of hot bread! The first week was difficult because I just wanted to eat the cakes, which wasn’t allowed, but then I lost interest in them. We had to keep everything clean, and it was hard work.
M: Did you enjoy serving customers in the shop?
W: Yes, it was interesting when people came in to plan a party or a wedding. One of the bakers would come to discuss the design of the cake. Customers thought the prices were high, but usually ended up buying the cakes anyway. They always wanted a perfect and special wedding or party and our cakes were beautiful and unique.
Text 10
M: Thanks for calling our competition hotline. We have all the information you need to enter this exciting painting competition. The most important date for you to remember is Oct 15, which is when you have to send in your paintings. We need them all in by this date because the winning paintings will be in a show held from Nov 10 to Dec 20 at the School of Arts.
The next important information to know is the topic of the competition. Last year’s topic, Nature, was very successful. The upcoming competition will focus on a theme that challenges your imagination. That is “The Future”. Think about the world around you. How might it look one hundred years from now?
We apologize for any inconvenience caused, but we won’t be able to return your paintings. However, you will be given a certificate as an acknowledgement of your participation. It’ll look great on your bedroom wall!
We welcome works from school groups, so make sure you tell your teacher about the competition. Schools can win a special course with Barry Wells. He’s an artist from Australia, who’s produced pictures for many children’s storybooks in England.

第二节
One weekend, Andy’s parents came to visit and watch his soccer game. He showed them around the dorm, introduced them to his friends and then took them to the soccer game. His mom smiled as she watched him play, seeing how happy and confident he had become. “That’s my boy,” she said proudly. Andy’s mom had been right: by getting involved and making friends, he had found a way to feel more at home in the dorm. He still missed his family, but now he had a new family of friends and teammates who supported him.
That night, Andy returned to his room feeling exhausted but happy. As he lay in bed, he realized something amazing: the snoring didn’t bother him as much anymore. He was so tired from all the activities that he fell asleep almost immediately. He still heard the familiar snores of his roommates, but now they were a comforting reminder of his new home. He closed his eyes, feeling grateful for his mom’s advice and for the friendships he had made. Andy drifted off to sleep with a smile on his face. He had learned to appreciate the community around him and discovered that home is not just a place, but also the people who make you feel welcome and loved.
