Characters

Personalities

Evidence summarized

Oliver

1. tough yet emotionally vulnerable (脆弱的)

2. fiercely protective of dignity

3. defiant (反抗的)

1. At first, Oliver puts up with Noah’s physical abuse (虐待) in silence. He cries when Noah mocks (嘲笑) and makes fun of his dead mother, showing he’s deeply hurt inside.

2. He finally fights back violently when Noah insults his mother. His response is more about defending his mother's honor than being violent.

3. He refuses to give in after being locked in the cellar, even shouting “I’m not afraid of you!” at Mr Bumble.

Noah

1. bullying

2. cowardly (懦弱的)

3. deceitful (欺骗的) or manipulative (操控的)

1. Noah starts trouble by hitting Oliver and calling him names, trying to upset him. Then he makes hurtful comments about Oliver's mother.

2. He immediately screams for help when Oliver fights back.

3. He pretends to cry and lies to Mr Bumble about Oliver’s violence to get Oliver in trouble.

IV.

A.

Physical size VS moral courage:

Noah is “twice Oliver’s size” but rather than being courageous, he uses his strength to bully a younger, weaker boy. In contrast, Oliver–smaller and vulnerable–shows fierce moral courage when defending his mother’s honor. This physical-moral contrast exposes Noah’s cowardice and Oliver’s inner strength.

Authentic (真实的) emotion VS manipulative behavior:

Oliver cries truly for his mother, while Noah “cries” falsely to fool adults, showing the contrast between honest sadness and planned trickery.

B. Mr Bumble’s ridiculous explanation of Oliver’s violence highlights how authority figures refuse to address real injustices. This reveals the twisted (扭曲的) logic of poverty management: the poor must stay weak and submissive (服从的), or else be punished for “ungratefulness”.

3. C。倒数第二段Holmes的研究发现“Those who have two to ive hours of free time each day report the highest levels of happiness and satisfaction.”因此,2-5小时是最佳区间

4. B。文章最后一段指出:“The key lies not in how much time we have, but in how we use it.”并建议通过锻炼、志愿活动等方式来有意义地使用时间,获得成就感。

4. D。根据文章最后一段中Vishal Furia的话:“India has a vast diversity of states, languages and cultures, each one having their own stories and folklore... there is no need to focus on the West”可知,印度有自己独特的恐怖传统。

Day 3 1-4 BABD

1. B。根据原文第一段“In the US, high school and college sports – especially basketball and American football – often seem to take center stage. Stadiums are filled with cheering fans, and games are treated almost like national events”,作者通过对比美国和部分其他国家(如中国)在教育重点上的差异,突出体现了文化中对体育和学术考试的不同优先级。

2. A。根据原文第二段“For young people from poor families, excelling in sports can be a way to escape poverty”可知,体育为美国学生——尤其是贫困家庭的学生——提供了通过体育奖学金支付学费、改变社会经济地位的机会。因此,可以推断体育在美国提供了社会流动性的机会。

3. B。根据原文第四段 “There is also a long tradition of linking athletics with character and leadership in the West. ... The Rhodes Scholarship ... emphasizes excellence in both academics and athletics” 可知,罗德奖学金的例子是为了佐证西方教育重视 学术与体育兼备的全面发展人才。

4. D。最后一段总结道:“Young people adapt to the opportunities society gives them. What seems very different on the surface may be more similar than we first think”,表明尽管中美教育体系在表面上有差异,但本质上都反映了社会通过提供不同机会引导年轻人发展的共同逻辑。

Day 4 1-4 DCCB

1. D。根据文章内容,OliverNoah的身体攻击是因为Noah侮辱了Oliver已故的母亲。文中提到“Noah insulted Olivers late mother”导致Oliver愤怒地攻击了Noah

Text 1

M: Shall we go to see a film tonight?

W: I’d like to, but I already promised my mom to help her with housework.

Text 2

W: The film starts at 8 pm so you can pick me up at 7:40 pm.

M: How about 7:20 pm? We need time to park the car.

W: OK. See you then.

Text 3

M: Have you taken down the main points in Professor Black’s lecture?

W: No, I haven’t got used to his teaching style yet. He speaks too fast.

Text 4

W: When I am playing the piano, I don’t worry about anything. How do you usually cope with stress?

M: I go to the gym every day. Exercise helps me blow off steam.

Text 5

M: Is David working late tonight?

W: No, he’ll be back at 7 pm. He went to get the car repaired after work. And then he went to the stadium. He must be playing football there now.

Text 6

M: Hey, Helen! What are you up to?

W: We’re doing a neighborhood cleanup.

M: Oh, that sounds interesting! What are you guys doing exactly?

W: Well, we’re picking up trash. The kids are painting that wall, and we’re planting a few trees along the sidewalk.

M: That’s awesome. Mind if I join?

W: Of course not! You can help Tina – she’s emptying that trash can over there.

M: Got it!

Text 7

M: OK, Diana, let’s move on to our next topic – food! What would you recommend trying in Chicago?

W: Chicago is famous for its Chicago-style pizza and hot dogs. The pizza’s special because the sauce goes on top, and the toppings are huge.

M: Wow, that sounds great! What kind of toppings can you get?

W: Pretty normal ones like mushrooms, cheese and tomatoes.

M: So, what’s your favorite topping?

W: I’d say pineapple. I know it might sound a bit strange, but ...

M: Pineapple? Really?

W: Yeah! It’s just my taste. I love how it goes with the cheese and sauce.

M: Fair enough! Well, that’s all for today. Thanks for sharing your Chicago favorites with our viewers, Diana.

Text 8

M: Hey, Sarah! How was your weekend?

W: Not bad. On Saturday I practiced driving with my dad. And yesterday, my best friend Lisa and I went for a walk in the woods near the highway.

M: Oh, but it was pretty cold on Sunday, wasn’t it?

W: Yeah, it was cold and windy. We both wore thick wool sweaters to stay warm. Still, the air was so fresh in the morning.

M: I bet it was nice and quiet out there.

W: It really was. We saw birds and rabbits everywhere.

M: Sounds lovely! Did you bring any lunch?

W: Yeah, we brought some sandwiches. We found a little bench under the trees and ate there. With the birds singing around us, it felt so peaceful.

Text 9

W: I just rented a car and now you get to drive it.

M: Wait, why me?

W: Because I can’t drive on the left side of the road!

M: Sure you can. It’s easier than driving on the right! Why don’t you give it a try?

W: No way. I’m afraid I’ll crash. You’ve driven in England before.

M: All right, fine. I’ll drive. London’s confusing anyway.

W: I’m used to driving in the French countryside, you know. There’s barely any traffic where I live.

M: Really? I thought you lived in Paris for a long time. That must’ve been tough, too.

W: Oh, I didn’t have a car when I was in college there. I mostly took the bus.

M: And walked a lot, right? London and Paris are both great cities for walking. You know what my favorite walking city is, though?

W: New York?

M: Oxford. And thats where were going today.
