写作训练

Dear Peter,

I’m glad you’re interested in the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge! Let me share some amazing facts about it.

As the highest bridge ever built in a mountainous area, it stands 625 meters above the Beipan River and has a 1,420-meter main span. Because of this bridge, travel across the canyon now takes only 2 minutes instead of 2 hours. It is a suspension bridge, which is good for Guizhou’s karst land because it does not need much support from the ground and is cheaper to build than cable-stayed bridges.

Engineers also used special technology to make the bridge strong. Eddy current dampers help reduce shaking in the wind. Magnesium coating and basalt material protect the cables from rust and fire. The bridge can even “breathe” with temperature changes because of special joints that open and close. Sensors also watch the bridge all Day to make sure it is safe.

If you want to know more, feel free to ask me.

Yours,

Li Hua

Day 3 1-3 CDB

1. C。原文明确提到“This is very important in Guizhou’s karst landscape”,直接说明地质条件是选择悬索桥的关键原因。

2. D。原文核心是“Each main cable of the bridge is made up of 217 strands () that were carefully arranged (排列) to share the load evenly (均匀地). This design helps the cables last longer and stay strong even if a few strands break.”,直接对应选项D

3. B原文提到These joints work like drawers, with their gaps closing tighter in heat and opening wider in cold, helping the bridgebreathe.”(工程师解释:我们在桥面、桥塔和缆索连接处设置了关节。这些关节像抽屉一样,天热时缝隙变窄,天冷时变宽,帮助桥梁呼吸

Day 4 1-4 CCDB

1. C。第段结尾写道:We went back and forth until she playfully stomped () her foot and let me go fi rst.”(我们互相推让,直到她开玩笑地跺了跺脚,让我先来。

Key foreshadowing examples

Textual evidence

Functions

Foreshadowing of Baron’s traits (特质)

“Having been raised for the show ring, Baron had no experience with children.”

“Dobermans are highly reactive dogs – this is one of the reasons they make such good guard and police dogs.”

These details give clues about how Baron might react to unexpected stimuli (刺激). Raised for dog shows, he is unfamiliar with the chaos (混乱) of a household with young children; his “highly reactive” nature explains why he would act instinctively (本能地) when stepped on.

Foreshadowing of the emotional development

“The moment Baron realized it was me, he immediately let go of me, frowned and anxiously circled around me, making a sad sound of guilt.”

This detail hints at the special connection that will form later between the author and Baron. Baron’s “guilt” shows he is kind and sorry for what he did, which helps set the stage for the continuation’s main idea of “trust and guardianship”.

B. 1. Possible versions:

  1. The storys core theme is that real connection and trust between humans and animals can grow even from unexpected accidents.
  2. The story explores how trust, once broken by a reflexive instinct (反射本能), can be rebuilt through understanding and forgiveness, leading to an even stronger connection.

2. Answers vary. Eg.: (1) Baron’s Apology. This title focuses on the dogs emotional journey of guilt and his lifelong effort to make up for his mistake. (2) Trust Beyond the Bite. This title highlights the storys emotional core: trust transcending (超越) the scary accident.

III.

1. Dad might see Baron lying quietly beside my bed, looking guilty and watching over me.

2. Baron might stay by the author’s bed all night, showing his guilt and care.

3. Baron might follow me everywhere, walk slowly to match my steps and protect me from strangers or other animals.

4. I might feel safe and loved, forgiving Baron and valuing our unbreakable connection.

IV. One possible version:

Later, as Dad came to check on me, he was amazed by the heartwarming scene before him. Baron had quietly come into my room. He gently pushed my elbow (胳膊肘) with his nose and kept nudging (轻推) until his head was under my arm. My arm ended up laying across his shoulders. He then rested his great black head on my sleeping chest and sat there, still as a statue (雕塑). He was watching over me, guarding me and showing both how sorry he was and how much he cared. My father said that Baron never moved, but held the same position through the long hours of the night.

After that night, Baron always stayed by my side, watching over me like a guardian. Baron would always walk patiently beside me, matching my slower steps, and constantly (不断地) turn his head to make sure I was OK. Luckily, the bite didn’t leave any scars on my face. And I didn’t develop a lasting fear of dogs, as so often happens in these cases. When I thought about Baron later, I rarely remembered how fierce (凶猛的) he could be. Instead, I remembered the feeling of his heavy head resting on my chest and the worried look in his eyes. This incident connected us with the unbreakable trust that lasted for his whole life.

Questions to ponder:

1. How does the continuation show the characterization in the given part?

1) For Baron: from “reactive yet remorseful (懊悔的)” to “a devoted guardian”

In the original text, Baron is described as a dog with no experience with children and a “highly reactive” breed trait. However, he immediately feels sorry (immediately let go, frowned, anxiously circled, making a sad sound of guilt) after accidentally hurting the narrator. The continuation builds on this:

In Paragraph 1, Baron’s actions (had quietly come into my room, gently pushed my elbow,  rested his great black head on my sleeping chest ...) show his deep guilt and desire to make things right – directly echoing (呼应) his initial remorse in the given part.

In Paragraph 2, his constant companionship (陪伴) (walk patiently, match the narrator’s steps ... ) turns his “remorse” into lifelong loyalty, proving the bite was an accident out of fear, not meanness. This highlights his gentle nature hinted at in the original text.

2) For the narrator: from “a victim of an accident” to “a trusting friend”

The original text presents the narrator as a playful 5-year-old who accidentally causes the incident. The continuation develops this by showing that the narrator isnt scared of dogs for long and focuses on Baron’s care. This reflects the narrator’s innocence (天真) and ability to forgive, which is in line with the childlike perspective established in the given part.

2. How is the theme highlighted in the continuation?

The continuation clearly highlights the core theme introduced by the accident and Baron’s remorse. Paragraph 2 directly states: “This incident connected us with the unbreakable trust that lasted for his whole life.” This sentence summarizes the theme. In addition, some plots demonstrate the theme:

1) Baron’s company that night (Para 1): His tender, protective watch over the narrator is a clear sign of his remorse and the growing bond of trust and care that comes from the scary incident.

2) Baron’s lifelong devotion (Para 2): His constant presence and patience show the long-lasting “unbreakable trust” and loyalty built through the incident.

3) The narrator’s memory and feeling (Para 2): The narrator’s choice to focus on Baron’s love and concern shows how the bond of trust and love defines their relationship.
