W: Are you going shopping this weekend? Well, if you’re in Shenzhen, Guangdong, first you need to pack a bag to carry the things you buy, or else be prepared to buy your own bag!
This month, people in Shenzhen will have to get used to bringing their own bags when they go shopping. The city will stop providing free plastic bags in shops and supermarkets. Shops will be fined between 5,000 and 50,000 yuan if they provide plastic bags or fail to offer environmentally friendly shopping bags for sale. In this way, the city hopes it can do a lot to help the environment.
“As shoppers bear the costs, it will help to cut plastic bag use,” the city government said.
“This could be a way for other Chinese cities to deal with pollution,” said Dong Jinshi, an expert on plastics recycling.
It may be that most Chinese approve of the new rule. In an online survey, 73.9 percent of people supported Shenzhen's plan and thought a similar move in their cities would be a good idea. 50.7 percent hoped that other environment-friendly plans were on the way.
