Topic seven: Environmental protection
M: Can you believe it? It takes 50% more energy to produce paper bags than it takes to make the same number of plastic bags.
W: Yeah, and you have to cut down trees to make paper. We’d better use cloth bags, you know.
W: Hi, why are you riding a bicycle? Is your car not working?
M: My car is fine, but I need to exercise more and this is a greener way of life.
W: You should have done it years ago.
M: Let me tell you something — I have joined our university’s Environmental Protection Action Group.
W: Since when have you been interested in saving our Mother Earth?
M: It’s true that I used to care about nothing except studying and having fun. But ever since I heard news of the flood back in my hometown that killed several people including a two-year-old kid, I’ve been thinking a lot. And now, I’ve decided to do something to protect the environment we live in.
W: Umm… I think you’re right. We are now faced with more natural disasters, like floods, drought, sandstorms, earthquakes… and there is more talk of global warming.
