Text 4W: Sandstorms are common natural disasters. They usually happen in deserts. Strong winds blow a huge amount of sand into the air. Sandstorms are so strong that they can blow you 1 to 1.5 meters away from where you are standing. Unlike some other disasters, sandstorms come with a warning. If the clouds have a dark brown color, it means there may be a sandstorm.
Xinjiang is one of the areas where sandstorms happen most often. It is in northwestern China, with mountains on four sides. It has a dry climate and vast deserts. The Tianshan Mountains, which are in the middle, cut the land into two large basins. Both basins have deserts in their centers where sandstorms begin.
